Give The Drummer Some. (Clyde Stubblefield)

Sorry if a bit OT, but as this is a hiphop forum, thought it would be appropriate. Im a long time lurker. If you've ever sampled the man's beats, it might be nice to help!

ChipIn: Clyde Stubblefield

Quote:
In July 2009, funk drumming legend, Clyde Stubblefield, whose sampled beats from his innovative recordings with James Brown have shaped the sound of hip-hop and drum & bass music, suffered kidney failure and began weekly dialysis treatment.

In July 2010, The Coalition for Clyde Stubblefield - an artist & industry association of Clyde's supporters - was founded by drummers Stanton Moore, Johnny Rabb and David Stanoch to spread word of Clyde's situation and new avenues being created expressly for donating financial support directly to him.

Clyde continues to work and perform regularly while dealing with the stress his kidney dialysis treatments demand.

We thank you for visiting this webpage and your desire to Give The Drummer Some, helping Clyde and his family find some relief as he braves this journey so they may feel some of YOUR soulfulness as we come together to help out a brother, an inspiration, our friend.

Remember, no contribution is too small and every penny makes a difference. JOIN THE COALITION & SPREAD THE WORD! Follow the simple instructions under the widget for embedding it into your own websites & social media pages! We thank you for your concern and generosity.

Sincerely,
THE COALITION FOR CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD

Clyde helped change the way that drummers play and approach funk and groove drumming. He created many innovative and creative grooves that are still challenging drummers today. He recorded several classic James Brown songs including "Say it Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)," "Mother Popcorn," "I've Got the Feelin'," and his signature track, "Funky Drummer."

Clyde's breakdown beat on this classic is one of the most sampled drum loops in history, used on pop and hip-hop hits by the Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, Dr. Dre, George Michael, Ice T, Nine Inch Nails, Parliament/Funkadelic, Prince, Public Enemy, and Sinead O'Connor, to name only a few.

To top that, his drumming on the break of James Brown's "Soul Pride" was sped up and cut up to create a rhythmic foundation for yet another popular musical genre, Drum and Bass.

Great post. How can you not throw a bone back to the funky drummer?

If everyone on here gave him a dollar, he'd be a lot more comfortable with his medical bills.

Someone needs to verify the validity of this link first though, before donating. Being that the OP has 1 post, this could be a scam.

Thats a good point. I saw this on a dnb message board i frequent LINK. The OP on that thread ive 'known' on that board for years.

I took it in good faith and thought of here, the biggest hiphop production forum afaik.

I cant guarantee it 100% TBH. Ive donated £5 so ive been suckered too if a scam... looks legit to me. and its paypal so they cant get credit card details.

I also use this same username over a number of other boards (UAD, SOS, SubvertCentral, DOA, Dubstepforum) fwiw. Ive also had dealings/met in real life with a number of people on here on other forums...

Take from that what you will.

Peace.

(also thought id posted before, been lurking for years ).

Thanks for the heads up. Will definitely donate.
One of the greatest drummers ever. Real sad to see such an influential musician struggle over medical bills. Unfortunately he´s not the only one out of that era.

Good post!

Him and Purdie are my two favourite drummers.

BTW check out 5.13, classic Stubblefield solo story.

I love this man. A sweet, kind soul and a musical giant.

Seriously, hip hop community: karma is knocking.

Do not deny it.

Please do help

I just donated. Bought a Korg Monotron and donated the same amount of money to Stubblefield.

We should all donate.

Everyone in this forum should donate if you can spare it at all.

Even $5 would help.

Let's not let this man suffer.

The payments are going to this email address: funky(at)merr.com
Merr(.)com is a phone service provider or something alike.
Although the title for the payment says :Contribution to Clyde Stubblefield by The Coalition for Clyde Stubblefield (dave(at)rhythmelodic.com) it goes to the address above (funky(at)merr.com).
Can somebody confirm the donation link is kosher? Thanks.

OK, I emailed David about some clarification. He joined Gearslutz, but advised that he has not received his confirmation email yet. So he cannot post. He asked me to repost his reply to me... He definitely seems to be on the up & up and is who he says he is...

This is fugging CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD people! The Funky Drummer. Lets spread the word.

below is the email (btw, I put dashes in the email addys, to cut down on spambots...).

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your interest & concern, I appreciate the head's up.

I tried to register over there but I don't see he confirmation email to active yet. If it comes I'll drop in but if you'd care to post the following message from me I'd appreciate it:

Thank you for your interest & concern. I co-founded the Coalition with drummers Stanton Moore & Johnny Rabb, and I moderate the website content which is why donators see my email for The Coaltion's account. Payments go directly through PayPal to Clyde's wife, Jody's email account, the recipient of the donations.

We'd also, you can understand, prefer to keep general public messages to Clyde public and not private due to demands on his time and health, which is another reason you do not see his private email address listed.

To question the legitimacy of such an endeavor is certainly fair. I can assure you we have worked hard to find the best possible method to provide a means to provide ongoing and meaningful support. It is very important to us. Clyde is more than a major musical influence on us. He is our brother, our mentor, our friend.

Watch for a formal news release coming within days on the donation campaign. We have the support of a number of top artists, educators and industry and we are hoping to spread the word far and wide.

Clyde and Jody have been overwhelmed by the love and support now coming their way. It is truly making a difference. Thanks to all of you here who have donated and are spreading the word. Your support is our greatest asset in our campaign to assist Clyde.

David Stanoch

Thanks so much, Scott.
All the best.
D.

Just came back - seen the updated replies. For some reason the email notification for replies isnt working... the first one did, odd.

I appreciate that with my first post here, this may have looked suspicious. I posted here in good faith having seen the link elsewhere. I have been lurking for years, just never got involved.

Many thanks to asylum for emailing them - i was thinking of doing the same. Posted this thread without thinking too much about it.

Cheers

Ben

Hey Paradigm X, hanks for bringing it to our attn... I don't think people were questioning it because you didn't have posts, the question was referred to in NKF's post (possibly some "funkiness" with the email addys) -

"The payments are going to this email address: funky(at)merr.com
Merr(.)com is a phone service provider or something alike.
Although the title for the payment says :Contribution to Clyde Stubblefield by The Coalition for Clyde Stubblefield (dave(at)rhythmelodic.com) it goes to the address above (funky(at)merr.com).

But, no. These guys are for real & they are trying to do some good. I now have the official press release (as of last night). If anyone wants it, please send me your email addy...

After my payment another name popped up: "Jody Hannon".
This is where the payments are going from the PayPal details after the payment.
You guys should make everything as transparent as possible.
For non-US guys like me this is even more confusing.
If this is legit you should do everything to make clear the persons involved, organizing this and, very important, who is receiving trust-holding the money. It would benefit your own goals.

Talking

Just made my donation.

The first track I EVER sampled, like EVER EVER EVER was Popcorn.

Its how I got into engineering, production, that moment in time got me started on this path that I'm on and now I'm reaping the benefits of it.

So give I did.

I wish Brother Clyde good health and I will keep him in my prayers.

Peace
Illumination
