The fancy sticks are Rods. Bundled little sticks that allow yo uto play with the same intensity, but with less volume. (I hate those, decent drummers can play soft also...)

The drumkit looks like a Taye set, and judging form the lugs, not an expensive one. Cymbals are pretty cheap Sabians.

The snare is an usual model, most snares are 14"x5,5" , this looks like a 10" or 12" that is way deeper. (8,5"??)

All in all, nothing fancy on drums going on here. These sets sound as good as the heads will let them. And since he is using the stock heads, probably not that good.

Cant imaging this is his recording kit.

BTW, is there a Philly blunt lying on the floor tom and is he holding a bag of weed (that is photoshopped out in the second picture) ?

theres also a bottle in the background haha...

i think the main thing with dilla drums is the groove... lots of people think that you need really great electronic drum kits or amazing drum sets, but dilla knows swing really well.

its like when drums are all layered and on top of each other, if there is no swing, then they all play at the same time. its harder to destinguish each drum hit and they kind of all mesh together. if there is a heavy swing. like lets say all the high hats are late, then the kick isnt hitting with anything else and is shining in its own glory.

Ha! that they would photoshop that is hilarious.

I am learning so much about dilla.

The one string bass is awesome.

The guy's genius transcended any equipment. You could probably go into his studio, use all his equipment and it would still not sound like Dilla.

Yeah. I think he set his swing on MPC etc... way higher than most. But from the looks of the photo maybe Jay Dilla was way higher than most :)

This has already been discussed here... and you are right.

Please : to whoever it may concern

- spare use your "thoughts" (anti-facts) on Dilla's production style or smoking/drinking habits... this is not what this thread is about as i have stated earlier
- it's about facts : gear that he used.

Thank you,

no hard feelings.

People are really contributing amazing informations here while others only pollute...

there was a time where you would come to gearslutz (yes even in the hip hop section) to discuss gear

hence the name : gearslutz...

But, of course, without moderation (or is there a moderator here... heRE... HERE... do i hear an echo?), things are barely above futureproducer standarts.

Thanks again Tony... How about contributing to the thread? Too bad you don't sell vintage synths but plugins...

If you really want to understand Dilla just understand that he would try things to see what worked and didn't instead of asking questions on a internet forum.

just seems that technology and the internet have made people loss site of the beauty of hands on application.

Take a look at that picture which isn't where Dilla did most of his work that's a later setup, and notice you don't see anything ground breaking or special.

That alone should show you it wasn't what he used but how he used it.
You were lookin g at the picture trying to identify things like they are special tools.
It's the same thing people tried to do with MadLib only to find out that his setup was nothing special.
You would gain more listening to his early stuff instead of disecting a picture.

That's kinda funny since this thread is like a typical Future Producers.

How so?

I asked about gear and it as it happens we discuss on a site called GEARslutz...

Makes only sense to me.

If you're not happy with it, feel free to discuss on other threads. You don't have to be on this one.

Can we go back to gear?

What have you contributed with your 4 posts in 3 years? Maybe you should contribute a little more before calling out the person who started the forum you are posting your questions in.

You need a "reality check".

Next time you want to start a discussion, try to lighten up a little bit. Asking people for help, and then chastising people when they don't immediately give you the answers you want will get you nowhere. Every thread has to have a little bit of movement... It's not all about raw information. There is also some opinions and even some joking around to be had. Especially, if you post a picture that has a bag of weed photoshopped out of it.
