Thread Starter | Limiters to prevent overs while tracking
Currently, I'm tracking directly from samplers into Nuendo through a pair of MOTU 192HDs. I would love to not have to worry about going over 0db. My question is what would do a better job? Prism Sound's Over Killer Barrel Limiters (which I've only seen on Fletcher's site) or Drawmer DL441s? Any other suggestions aside from those two would definitely be appreciated.

Turning the levels down and taking advantage of the obscene amount of headroom in 24-bit digital recording would be the best way (IMO). Especially if you're using samplers and such where the sampler isn't going to rush & bump the mic... Set a good level and go (why does everyone want to use up every last bit of headroom at the very first step?).

Be carefull you don't mash your sound when you could just reach over and turn it down.

that usually doesn't work out too well. no matter how transparent the limiting, it tends to change the tone and sound. better to just learn how to live near the top of your bit field, not over it. best, rlnyc ps... cheaper too. |

Those motu units have pretty good metering. You should be able to keep most signals from clipping.

Those hd192's are great converters by the way. Don't stress yourself, everything doesn't always have to be at the top of the meter to achieve a great sound.

So, in reality I'm already doing the correct thing. That's a load off my mind and wallet. Thanks tons. I just get worried so much when people come in and want me to crank all levels up because "that's how the big studios do it". I try explain digital distortion, but it doesn't work and I end up having to track while their not looking. Again, thank you for your time and responses.
