Neve Style Pre's

Hello all...I'm really interested in upgrading my vocal chain with some kind of "Neve" like pre.... I've recently seen alot of hype about the GTQ2 but I don't have 3 grand to spend....actually trying to stay under $2000 if at all possible...I thought about the Vintech 73 but have also seen (on some forums) that some users aren't crazy about them... So I'm here to ask for any input you all can give.... My current set up is U-87 to the Avalon 737 to the line inputs of the Digi 001.... Thanks in advance.....

Well, I look at it this way, your budget is $2000. For another $800, you have a 2 channel 1073 dpa. F**k it, spend the extra loot and get what you really want because I guarantee you will end up getting it in the long run.

If you can find it in your budget to get 2 channels of better converters for the Digi001 I'd recommend that too.

I used to have a Digi001 and those converters were very fuzzy and 2-dimensional.

So I take it the Vintech 73 isn't worth it all huh?

I have a Vintech 273 and I really like it. I was checking it out compared to the Liquid Channel we have here and I liked the Vintech MUCH better. Now, also think about where u want to be in the next 6 months months. Maybe u can save and buy a 3214 and get 4 pres or get a GTQ2 later on. Do u need more pres for tracking vocals or MPC??
DO u plan to move out of the 001 anytime soon?

If you can snipe a pair of Dan Alexander pres off ebay for about $1000, and then get a mytek 2 channel converter, I think you'd be pretty happy with your purchases.

You could probably get a chandler LTD-1, which I think is the best replica of 1073s for a small amount more than 2gs. The EQ is much more expansive on that joint then the GTQ, its got line ins too, not just DI.

I appreciate all the responses.... I'm leaning towards the Vintech X73 at this point...Even though I have $2000 to spend I wasn't trying to spend it all on a "neve" clone if I could get away with it.... Also looking to start saving for some good AD convertors soon... To Brandino, at this point I'm not really looking to get rid of the 001...I know it's dicontinued and I can't go to version 7 on Pro-Tools but it has been rock solid as far as stability...If anything, I'll probably wait it out to see when they debut the 003 and go from there (unless you have any suggestions)... Though this was my first post I'm always on here reading what you all have to say and I'm certainly glad they dedicated a section to the R&B / Hip-Hop world.... I know alot of engineers / producers in other genres look down at Hip-Hop / Electronic / Midi Studios but hey, Hip-Hop and the sub-genres to come from it is the biggest selling format right now..... and being in a city like Atlanta I see no shortage of clients anytime soon.... Again, thanks for the replies.... MUDNOC

since you seem unsure about the vintech, i would buy from some where you can test it and return it if you don't like it. you should also consider the great river mp2nv. i have it and won't part with it.

Are you recording people or just yourself? What is your end product need?

Well, I'm on Logic 7. I really like it alot. I used to only work on PT TDM. Logic takes a bit to get used to but once you get it down and learn (key word) you will fly.
BUt if u don't need all that stuff that Logic has then don't worry about it.
003, well maybe in 06. Very well could be. I think it's going to be $$$$. If all u need is the 32 tracks then stay in PT for now and get more gear and then make your next step.

The Chandler is a great unit.... But, the GTQ is actually a 2 channel unit for relatively close to the same amount of money. It also has line in's as well.. but, if you really need the extra EQ points..

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

This pre should be amazing and its 800 bucks.
http://www.chandlerlimited.com/produ...manium_pre.php

I would higly recommend picking on of these up. The components being used are the exact same components from the old Neves that everybody loves. The price is so so so right. Pick up a empircal labs lil freq EQ and a distressor and you are good to go.

I've heard mixed things about the Neve germanium's (great for guitars, not much else, etc).... But, I am very interested in hearing this one. Joe Barresi had good things to say about the Chandler, but again he was talking about guitars, too..

I wonder too. Is this thing going to have it's own sound or another clone type thing?
For the price I guess u can't go wrong.

At that price it seems hard to go wrong, I am really tempted.
I would grab the LTD-1 but for 1 single channel, the extra EQ doesn't really justify the price for me.
GTQ or similair will suffice.

Has anyone here actually used a "Lil Freq" ?
(by the way, i am referring to the EQ, not that chick in the studio, lol).

I have Distressors & am REALLY happy with them.
The Lil Freq looks ILL.

AVERILL AND PORTICO

BRENT AVERILL NEVE CLONES ARE GREAT PRE'S.

he has the best design out of all the cloners IMO. you can get 2 channels of his 1272 for under 2000, and they defenitley have the neve sound. some people hate on the 1272 , because of the mod that has to be done to make it a pre, but if done properly the are identical to a 1073 without the eq.

i have heard the portico is a nice pre as well, they go for $1649 for dual ch.

I heard these are good...

http://www.seventhcirclestudios.com/SCA/SCA.htm

Only catch is, you need to assemble them yourself.
(And they don't have EQ).

Funny... I've always thought they sounded better than the 888/24. They still may! LOL

Haha...no way man! I had 888/24's too, and while they were awful, they were one step above the 001 converters for sure.

On a scale of 1-10 the 001 converters are like a 2 and the 888/24s are a 3. Both awful. (with that said, people have still made good music with both).
