How would you rate every step in the mixing process?

Using percentage as representation of importance, how would you judge every aspect of the mixing process and if you could, explain? Examples would be compression, micing techniques, eqing, tracking, use of effects, limiting, mastering, and so on. So basically, we are talking about the "extremely important and necessary" to the "just a luxury" aspects of the mixing process.

This is a bit of a crazy question.
Everything single stage is just as important as the last.
Although recording is the hardest to undo, so i take a lot of care at this stage

How bout narrowing it down, and eliminating tracking.Just solely focusing on the mixing stage.Wouldnt that be a better place to start perhaps?

There are no stages or steps, it's one continuous process. It's all about flow.

Well..

There is an answer.

The most important thing is the band's vibe while tracking. How do they sound before you mic them and then how do they sound after you mic them.

Capture a good source and you'll pat yourself on the back while mixing/mastering

To me it seems as though he's trying to find out about the mixing aspect purely, as in the use of compression, eq, etc.And trying to source which most would rate on a scale of most essential.I remember reading an article about an engineer that said if he had only one thing that he could use, interms of fx's in mastering a track then he'd choose Eq.Compression, he said was an essential factor, but he felt EQ was the overriding choice, which could make a good track great.I tend to agree with him there.
