^ indeed. i've read that for the take that made the album he was drunk off his ass, playing lying flat on his back.

can't vouch for the veracity of that statement though.

I always liked that recording. Great to hear just the percussion tracks. What a great bass sound. He had a great touch. Always love how he played on "I Was Made To Love Her" by Stevie.

Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely one of the best songs on that album, I really enjoy his "darker stuff", thats the way love is, and grapevine and all of whats going on.

Listen to the synth work and the bassline on this track by Norman Connors. The 70s was nice.

Oh Yeah, I would be remorse if I didn't add the song that Luther Vandross did written by our own Phillysoulman.
Awesome song Bobby & Vinnie and all time great.
Most of Luthers music was produced by one of the all time greatest bassist in the world, Marcus Miller marcusmiller.com

FYI..that Tempts video,I was told was a promo video they did.
They didnt record vocals live with the band at the time,as its very misleading for those who do not know.
Ive been in that studio on various occasions in recent years via the Motown Museum and it always amazes me to see that tiny control room and rather small tracking room.

If only the walls could talk.

James Jamerson is a great bass player- his style was percussive and melodic at the same time, a real treat to listen to. Very "propulsive" material, if you can dig what I'm saying there- his playing really helps drive the songs to a conclusion.

If you wanted to know how to play the bass well, and how to add more than simple low end doubling to a track, without drifting into showboating, this is where you could go to learn it. A real musician.

Thanks for posting that. Playing the bass is one of my favorite things to do, and even when I listen to music I find an interesting bass line to be one of my favorite things. In the world of rock and roll, too much emphasis is put on the other instruments to the detriment of the bass line.

I don't know who played the bass on this song off of the What's Going On album- an album filled with great bass playing- but I love the bass line on it, for anybody who isn't that familiar with it:

YouTube - Marvin Gaye "Right On" (1971)

Great album, great message, great musicians.

after playing guitar for 8 years im just about to pickup my first bass when i get my paycheck on the 1st. ive been playing bass lines on my guitar more than i've been playing "guitar parts" for the last couple of months and want to learn. what internet resources (tutorials, youtube videos, lessons) would you guys recommend for this style of playing? who are the all time greats that I should be listening to?

I've been studying the entire Motown Singles collection for various reasons. They released all of the singles Motown ever put out up to 1971. Lots and lots of good basslines to check out ranging from simple and classic to complicated and classic.

Also look for "Jamerson's Hook" on youtube. He replays a lot of great basslines. Cool to check out the fingering and what not...

And on a bass nerd observational note... whenever I watch that "What's Going On" video, it always bugs me out at 2:46. Jamerson is playing a 16th ghost note on the D string then going up to the G string with one finger tutt... love that video

That was Babbitt.

Donald "duck" Dunn would be another good player to check out from booker T and the MG's

Hey! Playing the bass has its own techniques, of course, and I'm not going to get into them here. The challenge is to make the bass parts interesting in their own right, and a lot of bassists fail to do that.

A good place to start will be with the bass playing of the man that this thread is about: James Jamerson. As I've mentioned, he played in a way that was melodic (he wrote complete and concise melodic lines that can stand even without any other music), and he also wrote percussively (his playing emphasized certain parts of the beat).

Just be sure to keep that in mind and you'll be fine. Remember that technique is second to feel, and everything is less important that what a melodic line adds to a song.

It will be helpful if you write material on the bass, and fit other things around it- that's a fun and rewarding challenge. Listen to music in which the bass takes a prominent role- reggae is one, usually the main melodic line is on the bass and the guitars are percussive in nature. But don't get too wrapped up in that- you'll know when you're listening to a song whatever the bassist is doing if you focus on it.

Good luck!
