Thanks thi is great. He always amazes me, Does anyone confirm if he played the bassline on innercity blues? I just have it credited as the funk brothers sounds like him so simple and funky as hell

^ indeed. i've read that for the take that made the album he was drunk off his ass, playing lying flat on his back. can't vouch for the veracity of that statement though.

nice video btw...really informative to hear it just with drums. also to note the striking similarity here between this bassline and that amy winehouse track.

I always liked that recording. Great to hear just the percussion tracks. What a great bass sound. He had a great touch. Always love how he played on "I Was Made To Love Her" by Stevie. Thanks for sharing.

![]() Thanks for sharing that Bobby, I was going through some of the other related video's and James Jamerson's son said that his father taught him that (''if you don't feel it, don't play it'') he definitely had that feel. Songs like ''Heat Wave, My Guy, Shop Around'' and some Stevie Wonder songs using the upright bass. He also saw a fat woman walking and watching her butt go ''kaboom, kaboom'' was how he used that to form his rhythm / timing and that along with the dirt on the bass and his one finger playing gave him his sound....amazing. That's the kind of stuff legends are made of. YouTube - JAMES JAMERSON James Jamerson's son talking about his Dad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbEWU4jVfcc&NR=1 Bob Babbitt on James Jamerson / Marvin Gaye, got Jamerson from a club ( Bobby you are correct) to play ''What's Going On'' Jamerson who had been drinking, played the session while laying on his back...Wow. Those of you that know me, I usually put other video post that may not be necessarily related to topic as opposed to starting another post, so if it offends anyone I deeply apologize, you can just move on. To me, music is so vast and transcending that it's hard for me to confine it to one subject in particular. I ran across some very inspiring video's that I like to share with whomever likes to view them. I hope it inspire you as much as it did me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZTRUpALajc&feature=related The Funk Brothers & Chaka Khan - What's Going On http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVOEC8MwUks&feature=related Ben Harper with the Funk Brothers - Ant To Proud To Beg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=citRQrth0XE&feature=related Westlife- What Becomes of the Broken Hearted (Live) White boys with soul, Nice back vocals. FYI..that Tempts video,I was told was a promo video they did. They didnt record vocals live with the band at the time,as its very misleading for those who do not know. Ive been in that studio on various occasions in recent years via the Motown Museum and it always amazes me to see that tiny control room and rather small tracking room. If only the walls could talk. |

James Jamerson is a great bass player- his style was percussive and melodic at the same time, a real treat to listen to. Very "propulsive" material, if you can dig what I'm saying there- his playing really helps drive the songs to a conclusion. If you wanted to know how to play the bass well, and how to add more than simple low end doubling to a track, without drifting into showboating, this is where you could go to learn it. A real musician. Thanks for posting that. Playing the bass is one of my favorite things to do, and even when I listen to music I find an interesting bass line to be one of my favorite things. In the world of rock and roll, too much emphasis is put on the other instruments to the detriment of the bass line.

I don't know who played the bass on this song off of the What's Going On album- an album filled with great bass playing- but I love the bass line on it, for anybody who isn't that familiar with it: YouTube - Marvin Gaye "Right On" (1971) Great album, great message, great musicians. |

Also look for "Jamerson's Hook" on youtube. He replays a lot of great basslines. Cool to check out the fingering and what not... And on a bass nerd observational note... whenever I watch that "What's Going On" video, it always bugs me out at 2:46. Jamerson is playing a 16th ghost note on the D string then going up to the G string with one finger tutt... love that video That was Babbitt.

A good place to start will be with the bass playing of the man that this thread is about: James Jamerson. As I've mentioned, he played in a way that was melodic (he wrote complete and concise melodic lines that can stand even without any other music), and he also wrote percussively (his playing emphasized certain parts of the beat). Just be sure to keep that in mind and you'll be fine. Remember that technique is second to feel, and everything is less important that what a melodic line adds to a song. It will be helpful if you write material on the bass, and fit other things around it- that's a fun and rewarding challenge. Listen to music in which the bass takes a prominent role- reggae is one, usually the main melodic line is on the bass and the guitars are percussive in nature. But don't get too wrapped up in that- you'll know when you're listening to a song whatever the bassist is doing if you focus on it. Good luck!
