Damn, I don't miss those days. Thank god for logic. I can have all that stuff in my lap sitting on the couch. Just seems outdated in terms of all of those sounds being easily accessible virtually. I also think those sounds aren't back in style yet. Just my opinion, but there are simpler ways to work that result in easier backup, easier recall, easier editing, no electrical noise, and much better use of space. No offense, but I sit here happy I don't have any more stacks of synths and beats all untracked.

Forget all that stuff and just get yourself a MacBook Pro, and Logic Pro 9. Get yourself a firewire interface, monitors, midi keyboard, MPC or midi drum controller, and purchase some good software instruments.

Wow at people telling dude to sell his hardware. I mean if this is what he likes why change it? I know I personally have a hard time falling in love with just software.

First off... your diagram is horrible. I don't agree on just software. Yes if your starting up then software is the way to go. If you know hardware than thats always a plus... From the gear you have... you should already know about this. If you just bought this just because some dude told you its a hott setup, you got ripped just cause it will take you forever as a starter to really understand hardware and midi together (in my opinion)

As far as your question... your setup is alright... what type of midi patchbay is that? The MOTU Midi Express 128 is really good! I'd maybe invest in a decent mixer or patchbay so you won't have to unplug or plug in everything all the time. Both of those makes life way way easier! Your gonna want it eventually...

GOODLUCK!

I agree your gear is outdated...

If you got some funds...

Latest Mac Pro w/ multiple screens
Logic 9 w/ tons of third party synths/software sample libraries
invest in some sick drum sounds
apogee ensemble
neve 1073dpa
hardware synths of choice
mpc4k or asr-10 w/ turntables
decent monitors- I like dynaudio and JBL
Midi controller- small semiweighted like akai mpk series, as well as an 88-key fully weighted if you really get down on the keys (I like CME products)
macbook pro with apogee duet for travel

thats just expensive for no reason. I am not saying don't invest in yourself but you say his setup is outdated then tell him to get an asr 10 or a mpc 4k? whats wrong with the 2kxl he has in mind. And then a midi controller on top of that? then get a macbook on top of the mac desktop? just for starting out? Idk I hate working with 2 computers anyway kuz I always want files from one system or the other but this can be really simplified to a midi controller a laptop daw of choice decent monitors decent interface

Room is treated, and I have a Mac Pro, but I prefer working with hardware then tracking it to Logic.

I started out in 2002, with the MPC I still have. I also have a Mac Pro and Logic. I prefer hardware. Are you sure this is "Gear"sluts?

My gear is outdated? and your list contains most of my gear? Ok... I just like hardware rather then messing with a computer to much.

it's hard to answer something like this because everyone has their own needs. if that's what you need to make music then great. some people need more, some need less. will you be recording anyone with your production setup? if so you'll need a preamp and a microphone. that's the only thing that i can really think of that you may need (besides the obvious room treatment)

I don't do vocals just beat production, the vocal tracks get done in another studio and then it and the beat get sent out for mastering.

The only issue I see is using gear with outdated saving options, that can really be a pain in the ass, but if he's already used to it and knows what he's doing, it doesn't really matter. Plus, I know the MPC could be fitted with a multi-card reader so that could be remedied.

I prefer Hardware over software all day for creating, so I understand. Some people are just more kinesthetic. It's their personality. They need that feel to get their best creativity. Working with computers is like a visual over-load that's distracting and mind numbing to people like this.

lol the thing to do now is get the best of both worlds, 2kxl is straight too I jsut like the 4k better

Logic and Mac is like standard... laptop was just if you wanted it for travel

Remember this isn't some optimal set up just what I suggest... If you don't like my suggestion don't get it

In terms of hats legit outdated... the EMU stuff lmao

I am a Hardware fan myself but could never afford an MPC well at least it was the last on my gear list.
I always liked how BoonDoc was using the MPC but now he has also changed to Logic and bought an Mpd24 as it is more simple to work with.
After working with the Mpd for two years now I just couldn't change now to an MPC and cut the samples and do everything on it.
But some people still like to work that way.
The mastering is being done in a DAW with plug-ins so no hardware is really needed and still get the sound I need. (90s hip-hop)

YouTube - BOON DOC: Psychedelic Beat In LOGIC PRO (2010)

Of course it's up to you.

2 Furman M-8x Power Conditioners
Speck X-Sum Mixer
Digital Music MX-8 MIDI Patch Bay
Dynaudio BM6A Monitors
definately looks like the year 1999. keep the mpc and asr10 and get computer with logic. use all 3 together and u can sound like all the major producers out. that is if the music is good.

why what's wrong with that?
I think he is great in both ways, as he can make a chopped sample style beat and his sample free instrumentals are great as well.
Did you check all of his videos?
I've just posted this one as this is his first video using the Mpd.
some of my favorite producers are: preemo, pete rock, dilla, the beatminerz and so on, maybe we are listening to different type of hip-hop?

I don't get why people say you shouldn't buy expensive gear to start out with? When I first started I bought an 88key Korg Triton Studio with an MPC2000xl and at the time (2001-2002ish?) this what like 4K worth of shit. I made 4K back selling beats on mp3.com and soundclick within a few months. I produced a bunch of underground albums, and had a great time. Learned a ton, and once I learned a ton I could really use my pieces to their full potential instead of finding myself limited and having to buy a bunch more shit and sell off my "beginner junk"?

I think sometimes the best way to do things is "dive right in". I think alot of people are intimidated by the fact that someone can come in and buy a bunch of top gear like its one more person "working against their success". Remember, if you suck at music production / arranging / beat making, no matter what equiptment you fail. So it shouldn't intimidate you. If anything, its just more gear that gets sold cheap barely used on ebay.

I'm not recommending newbs run out and drop 5 stacks on equiptment but dont buy dumb inexpensive shit you cant use or that youll outgrow quickly. An MPC is a great start, but lets be honest, you can expand your library in a DAW with midi controller easier. You have easier editing. You have larger storage, etc. etc. etc. Just think smart.
