M audio project mix mic problem??? Please help

ok my friend bought an M-Audio PROJECT MIX I/O and im trying to help him set it up.......I know how to switch between DAWs to set it to pro tools or nuendo... and its links up perfectly it plays all my old projects... no problem...

now i try to hook up his bluebird mic directly to the 1st mic input on the project mix..... no pre amp no vocal strip just mic to mixer via XLR cord and i get a whole lot of popping even with the gain almost all the way down...... so i bought a new cord ....same problem... brought over a different mic still poping.... ive tryed both pro tools 8 m powered and nuendo..... no luck.... now ive read that the project mix has built in pre amps in some of the mic inputs .... im thinking this might have something to do with it... the person who sold him the unit said it was a HUI setting in pro tools but ive looked and all the settings look correct to me ... IDK help me out here guys....

hmmm,

it maybe something completly different from what I am thinking, but I had a similar problem on my profire 610, turns out there was oxidation build up and I had to clean it out using this:

CAIG DeoxIT D5S-6 Spray, Contact Cleaner / Rejuvenator, 5 oz. and more General Care & Cleaning at GuitarCenter.com.

The project mix, unfortunately is a horribly designed interface - but a nice control surface.

The mic inputs and line inputs both route through the mic pre amp, so using this with outboard pres ain't gonna happen.

Anyway, are you experiencing this on all the inputs or just that one?

Did you set the switches correctly? (LINE / MIC on every input) Switched Phantom power on? This is def not a HUI setting, that is bs. I own a PM myself, and the mic inputs work fine for me (not that I use them, I use external pres and the digital in / out).

if you set everything up correctly, it should work. Weird, seems like a problem with the interface. If the thing is broken, maybet get a Behringer ADA8000 through adat. again 8 ins, better quality.

yeah, i believe the hui setting is just for the control surface, not the interface. all 8 inputs come with preamps. each input also has a red light that tells if your signal is clipping. have you checked that out yet? also, do you hear the popping in the headphones of the pmio or from your speakers? or both? is it possible to check your mic with a standalone mixer? If this hasn't been done, also make sure you've got the latest update from the m-audio site.
