Creating sense of crescendo and decrescendo (any tips?)

Does anybody have any tips for getting a sense of crescendo and decrescendo in RnB beats? I was listening to Halo by Beyonce today and it just seemed like during the chorus a shit load of synths and other pads were playing and it gave it a sense of a build but I know theres more to it than just slapping a bunch of sounds together.

Send a message via Skype™ to ramil
also minimal tempo changes combined with volume automation helps to create that impression
