Thread Starter | Rosetta 200 + FL Studio? Hey im running XP on a MBP via bootcamp, with an MBOX2... I'm just wondering if anyone is using the rosetta with FL Studio, I presume it should work just as with any other DAW but I just want to see what kind of results you good people have had... thanks, john acoolstick.com |

| Dream Catcher | Hey, I've used a Rosetta in the studio, and I have a Mytek DA at home that I use with Fruity. As far as fruity is concerned, you will be able to get a better sense of the sounds you are using within Fruity (Because of the improved DA). You'll also be able to make better mixing decisions too (if you are using FL to mix or another software). The AD, on the other hand, is mainly used when you are recording music inside of your computer. For example: I use the MicroX in FL, I use Midi to play the MicroX, the unit is then sent to the AD of the unit, and can be recorded that way. Same with the PodXT, Guitar Amps (Preamp needed and mic along with AD), Vocals (Preamp and mic needed as well) and so forth. All in all, you will mainly be using the DA of the Rosetta (meaning the sound coming out of the Rosetta), via SPDIF. You will have to set the MBOX2 on external, so the Rosetta can function with SPDIF. You will definitely hear a difference in sound, but! You need to have good set of speakers, as well as a treated room to hear the difference with the AD/DA conversion. If you want to bring the sound out of the unit to use external hardware, then you will be using both AD and DA. For example. I need to use a distressor to make my kick punchier. I have to export the Kick file from FL (or record within FL if you want), put the kick in a multi track Software, playback the Kick, link the DA into the Distressor, apply the distressor to taste and then send it back to the AD to record. Now you realize why Studios need 16/32 channels of AD/DA for their studio. It's because, from what I can understand, they need to send the DA to their mixer so they can individually tweak the tracks (with EQ, Compression) in relation to other tracks. Of course, some mixers have cards to link the multitrack DAW to the mixing board. Correct me if I'm wrong on this. About mixing boards, I understand that they link tracks inside of their multitrack software, put them on specific DA channels, tweak, then Sum all the tracks to a 2 track AD. This is why total recall can be very important at this point. Again, someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not 100% technical (I get helped by a more knowledgeable/technical engineer). I usually just mix, use tools, then send it to a Crane Song Hedd or other device to record the 2 track mixdown for mastering. Hope this helps. |

| i like how FL can't get away from fruity. They really F'ed that one up years ago. I record into my FL all the time from my motif rack. I wouldn't say he would just be using the DA. Of course i don't have any nice preamps or converters so i come in spdif from the rack except for my records then i come in using my mbox 2 pro pre's and converters . Sounds fine. |

Thread Starter | hey thanks mr. chris --- thanks for your response - since it seems you have experience with both I was wondering if I should just bite the bullet and get the HEDD to use as my AD/DA instead of the rosetta -- because, from what I've read, it seems like the benefit of the 3 dsp effects on the HEDD is quite worth it - BUT i dont want to sacrifice the conversion quality --- also, my room although not very large is treated with homemade 703 traps and I use Yamaha hs50m's with the hs10w and i bypass the mbox preamps with a rane ms1b ... i know it's a budget set up but i'm hoping this purchase of the rosetta/hedd will give me a huge leap in quality |

| Dream Catcher | The Cranesong Hedd is a great AD/DA, you can't go wrong with that. But, considering you only have a Rane Ms1b, maybe you should get a Dav BG1 or other quality 2 channel pre for your synth and then spend the money on an AD/DA. If you can test drive the converter before buying, it's always a great idea. For Mixdowns I prefer the Hedd to the Rosetta, but I also like my Mytek DA too. Once you start getting at this level of conversion, you need to try the converters to choose which one is best for your setup. I would have no problem cutting some great tracks on all 3. |
