Looking to improve my vocal chain, which way would you go?

Hi Guys,

I currently have a little bit of money to spend on upgrading my vocal chain. I mainly record hip hop / RnB vocalists in a well treated space. I am looking for pieces that will compliment what I already have and hopefully add a little more versatility to my studio. Below are the chains I am currently considering…

A) Aurora Audio GTQC ($3800) + Beesneez James ($1500) = $5300
B) Great River ME1NV ($1450) + Distressor ($2400) + Beesneez James ($1500) = $5350

I currently own an Avalon 737, AT4050, AKG 4000B, Shure Sm7b.

Which option out of the two do you think will improve on what I already have the most??

Cheers guys.

Wow, that's splittin' hairs. Any of the gear you mentioned will compliment what you have already.

Whatever you get, make sure it includes the Distressor.

Hi Tony,

I don't think i can get it that cheap from a dealer in Melbourne Australia. I was sold on the GTQC but the local prices on both the Distressor and Great River have dropped in the last few weeks, which has made me a little indecisive.

I need the added versatility of a different chain as we have a lot of different artists through and the more bases covered the better.

I guess I'm just wondering whether the pre / comp of the GTQC is comparable / better than the great river - distressor combo. But as someone mentioned I'm probably just splitting hairs.

Cheers for the feeback guys, if anyone else has any thoughts i'm all ears.

what about 500 series?

But since your an Aussie, Check out JLM audio. Joe's based in Brisbane and sells top quality gear.

Joe's got a 1176 comming out in 500 series along with a whole heap of other gear.

I've been thinking about getting into the 500 series, I'll definitely have a better look into that and see how it weighs up.

Thanks mate.

Why get a different pre? You already have a 737, use what you have first no? I'd get a great mic and I'd use it with the 737. What is your AD/DA?

I like the c800g with the 737, and U87/737 of course.

I will be getting a U87 in the very near future (i like that combo too!), just holding off til i find a good 2nd hand one down my neck of the woods. I've never used the C800g but have heard good things.

Don't get me wrong, i like the 737 a lot and I'm not looking for a replacement. I'm just after something a little different to compliment the current setup.

I use my Rosetta 800 for AD/DA.

If you get that then you'll sound like everyone else. Is that what you are going for?

I noticed you said versatility....I'm no guru but i really like my UA 710 twin-finity....from 100% solid state to 100% tube or any combination of both. From crisp and crunch to creamy and smooth, subtle but quality. Both sides have an almost vintage feel to them....especially with my tlm49

"Everbody else" cannot afford the price of an 800 G,or an Avalon for that matter.

I was about to say too. Who the hell can afford to throw 5grand on a mic?!? You need to be making good money, so no, not everyone can afford one.

Also, how can you sound like everyone else by using the same mic? We all have different voices lol. It's not like you're using a Les Paul through a JCM800 with an sm57... It's a human voice.
