Thread Starter | What have you bought in the last few weeks?
Ok am a little bit curious about how record sales are doing right now, we all know there not what they used to be but as engineers & producers do you feel a resposibleity to still pay for new music or like most ppl out there are you like hell no i will just cope the mix tape or get a pirated download.
I was pleased to see that there is still a lot of vinyl being pressed including the last eminem LP, not just underground stuff. This morning i got sent some new & old wax from UGHH.
This is what i bought.
Freestyle Professors - Gryme Time LP
Hell Razah - Renaissance Child LP
Dr Dooom 2 - LP (kool Kieth)
Organize Konfusion - (first LP)
Black Milk - Popular Demand LP
Diamond District - In the Ruff LP (yeah i know it is avalible as a free download but IMO if some one is making good music and pressing it on wax i will try to support)
Don't think this is a thread to see who's is listening to underground and who is mainstream as it's most centenly not. Am just interested if at this point in your career or stage of life you still spend a decent proportion of cash on new music, underground or mainstream, or is it all being saved for new GEAR and you prefer to keep up-to date of what is happening via just listening to radio, you tube/music TV and so on.

I haven't bought a CD in a Looooooooonnnnnggggg time, but also I don't illegally download music either.
To answer you question though the last CD's I bought were I don't even remember what the names of the albums were,
Thelonius Monk
John Coltrain
Herbie Hancock
and there was one other one I can't remember. And I bought those about 2 years ago. I don't agree with illegally downloading music, but I do agree with it's use as a tool to pre-view an album, but only if you are going to buy the actual album, but that doesn't happen that often. But as I said personally I don't download music illegally and if there is an artist that I like I try to go their shows and support them that way.

I still buy a lot of recorded media. Not particularly because I'm against illegal downloads, but because I find the sound quality of MP3 to be really poor.
Independent record shops are dropping like flies in the UK, except in larger cities where they seem to be hanging on... It's a shame.
I know you can get pretty much anything off the web, but it's not the same as digging, where you end up with cool stuff that you didn't necessarily go out to get.
So I buy CD for general listening, and vinyl for stuff I want to sample.
Recent buys on CD
Willie Isz - Georgiavania... Some good tracks, not as good as it should have been.
Portico Quartet - Knee deep in the north sea... Nu jazz, with a nod to the old boys, cool.
Nationwide Rip Ridaz... That shit's funny, I think they are all dead now.
London Elektricity - Syncopated City.... New school DnB, a bit "singy" but ey tidy dum pogramming.
On wax
Ornette Coleman - The empty fox hole... His then 13 year old son holds down the drums on this. Really nice if you take the time to tune into the whole free jazz thing. Lots of excellent wide open drum sounds.
Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson - Winter in America... Beautiful record... probably won't sample it as it's already been spanked, but amazing

Nice to see your still buy new stuff, i get the feeling there aren't to many of us left. | So do you go over there to buy Terry? Or do you have someone US based to send you stuff? And when you say 'bulk', what sort of numbers are you talking about? - just interested.. I always have a long, long list of stuff I want, the list is longer than my money, put it that way.
People look at me like they think I'm 'special' when I talk about buying CD and records, and look at me bewildered when I talk about MP3 sound quality.
I'm gonna just big up Wax Well records in Amsterdam... Sick selection of classic funk,soul,jazz.... Bit expensive though, but that might just be the strength of the euro vs the pound.
And Probe records in Liverpool... Small selection but diverse and good prices.
I got more... I would be really interested to hear from other members where they shop for beats (worldwide, cuz you never know where you might be at one day)
When the small / specialist record shops are gone, our inspiration and resources will be diminished.

I really wanted The Dramatics- Watcha see is watcha get, and they had it, mint, but 35 euros?
I'd have left there happy if I'd had about 4 grand

These days I only listen to music for inspiration, I don't buy anything popular. I like to dig barrels for forgotten classics, I'll put the radio on some unknown station, or I'll even use the cable music network channels to find stuff, but I haven't bought any new CD in about 2 years. Heck, I've still got 100s of cassette tapes handed down with old stuff that I would rather go thru, not to mention the stuff we used to record from the radio in the 80s... I still have that stuff and it always brings back memories.
F'it, I'd rather live in the past
