im not saying that 50 is the best lyrical m.c. but he has the best hooks in the industry.

again what the hell was nelly thinking when he dissed the teacher.

as a producer my job is to put together the best song. if the track is fire, and the hook is fire, and the m.c. has a nice flow in my opinion thats 85% of the song.

imo a great verse does not equal a great song.

First off, go rent the movie THE MC. They break down the differences between a rapper and a MC. 50 is a rapper. And not a good one. His hooks have all the same feel to them, kinda like DMX doing all his hooks, quickly they start sounding the same.
I do agree though that a great verse does not equal a great song. Perfect example is Canibus. But having nothing but catchy hooks get kinda mindless and boring too. But, you will last a little longer.

Duh! I'm an idiot. I came here from scanning "New Posts" and following the thread, never bothered to look at what Forum I was in.

My bad.

Most underrated then, or should I say "under the radar", is Af The King (www.aftheking.com) - his CD "Torture, Taught Ya'" is a great hip/hop record with lots of great musicianship and killer song writing.

Af's lyrics are not misogynistic, violent, disrespectful, or full of over-the-top bravado. Which is why you never heard of him.

Here's to hoping his follow-up moves him up the list, he deserves a strong fan base (and a better web site!)

You don't know shit about me, so don't assume you do. THAT is stupidity, at it's finest. You can go on back to futureproducers.com with that B.S.

funny how opinion threads always turn into arguments. stop being ridiculous. its a very subjective question, without any real right or wrong answers...so wheres the logical argument there?

A lot of people say that (probably more than not). My problem is that I don't think 50 really has hooks. At least I have a hard time remembering them because they aren't catchy to me, and they are just kind mumbled, monotonal, and boring. That of course is just MY opinion. But it always interests me to see so many people (probably the majority) find what I consider to be boring, as catchy.

Over-Rated
Everything on the commercial radio except Common and the Roots. All that other sh!t is garbage! 50, Fat Joe, Yayo, Flip, Ying Yang, Puff, Jadakiss, etc etc etc. ALL JUNK! Or shall I say krunk. I feel sorry for Fat Joe cause I loved his first album, his 2nd was ok, but the played out samples was a but move on his side. I don't blame him though, he's making his paper and as much as I don't like what he has evolved into, he needs to pay the bills. Nas is still ill, but imo he has also fallen off a bit, and Busta too.

Under-Rated
Common Sense "Can I Borrow A Dollar?"
Commons first album displaying clever freestyle flows and nice beats. Since he has commercialized a little and gained fans unaware of true meaning of hip hop, this album has totally been slept on imo since it probably doesn't appeal to the commercial crowed like his newer material. All the underground heads know whats up though. This cd is RAW.

Gravediggaz "6 Feet Deep"
I never hear Wu / RZA fans mention this album. WTF? This album is filled with dark intense lyrics and beats. Crazy lyricism. Diary Of A Madman f#cking insane! This album and Enter The 36 Chambers is some of the RZA's finest work. And not to take away from the other mc's, Frutkwan and Too Poetic, they really represented on this album.

common and pharoahe monch are two of my favorite m.c.s
Like water for chocolate is a LANDMARK album for hip hop. its in my top 5

when you just listen to the music(not the hype, beef,or bullshit),theres alot that i like out of the aftermath/shady/g-unit camp

producers
dre,hi-tec,scott storch,havoc,and even em

in todays music(whats happening in the last 5 years)these are most of my favorite producers. also timbaland, just blaze, touch of jazz(andre, vidal, carvin and ivan).

so because i am a fan of those producers im going to at least listen to what they put out.
