Selling your beats vs. getting tracks placed

I'm from the old school world where you take your tracks and then go around to different A&R's from labels and publishers and try to get your tracks placed on an album. In that scenario you get the upfront producer's fee (usually around 1 - 5 g's if you're new to the game) and then additional points from record sales. That's what I'm used to dealing with.

How does beat selling work? I think I get the basic picture. you sell the track to an artist for a fee and I assume you give up all rights to the song. In this scenario do you get production points on sales? Do you even get production credit on the cd insert?

Just trying to better understand "da game".

it depens on what level your working at. If your doing beats for local MCs, it will usually be just a flat fee and that gives them (the MC) the rights to the song.

As far as label stuff goes, you get the fee up front, you get points, and you also get a writers credit for publishing $$. But of course this is all negotiable.

I never give anybody any rights to the song. I tell people to use it and put it out within a year, or we go to contract. Call me after you sell 5000 copies, and we will work a fair deal.

With bigger artists, it's just like the labels, you get your front end, work with points and wait for your backend unless you got a lot of samples, then you probably won't get too much.

1-5 is pretty good if you don't have a lawyer or a team. At this point I'm willing to give my beats to artists that are big in return for mechanicals and more publishing. I can live off of selling beats to local rappers, but I'd rather get my beats to more established artists. The problem is that you really need to come from a "camp" if your getting your beats out there. It's the difference between "unsolicited" and "solicited" material. That's why so many whack producers get put on, is because they know more people than you or I.

I don't care who the rapper(s) are. If I made the beats, then I get recognized in the credits, or its a no deal situation.
