Berkleemusic Offers Hip-Hop Writing and Production Course ..... some thing just should not be taught in school .

my friend that goes to berklee now told me that everyone gets a copy of reason adapted berklee edition when they enroll.

Ok Class, today were going to learn how to make a phatt beat using your supplied reason software. Please turn to page 5 in your hip hop textbook.
Our first lesson will be how to communicate using hip hop lingo.
Please repeat after me, "Yo dog, dat $hit is bumpin yo. Turn up da headphones homie". "Yea, dats it, butta dog, kik dat $hit".
Ok class, now please load the Phat Beat kit provided with your software.
Were going to start with a 90 BPM tempo. Place your software in record, and put the slamming snare on two, and four....

You gotta be jokin me guys.. This is just sick. Whats the homework assignment, to go sling some dope, and smack a few ho's so you can come back to class and write a rap about it? Not that raps all about that, but do they really think you can teach hip hop?

there is nothing wrong with doing hip hop in reason. i dont use the sequencer, but it can work fine. i use reason as a sound module with the sonic refils and it sounds very good. i would say reason is fine for composing.

Reason has one of the worst sound engines, you cant teach talent my friends. That couse is a joke.

I agree that the sound engine in reason is a little strange, but I think anyone with talent can still write a great track with it and with a little work can get it to sound as good (or bad, depending on your hip hop philosophy) as anything on the radio.

This post just made me buy a bunch of sonic refills for the hell of it.

what could be more hiphop than reason? hiphop is all about doin' stuff quick and dirty with whatever works, whether it's two turntables, beatboxing, or fruity loops... i've heard wicked beats made with "junk" and garbage beats made with pro tools hd3005. yeah this is gearslutz but if you wanna talk silly 'bout "sound engines" go drop a grand for an sp1200 on ebay or something and make someone besides me grin.

the reason 3 sound engine is much better. that with the sonic refils sound very good. its not my only source for sounds (fantom/micro q/imposcar/reaktor) but its a great compliment and easy to work with. im curious as to those who complain about reason even have reason 3.

xhiphop. get the sonic refil box set and the mello-t refil. esoundz.com is a good place to get them. if the refils you want arent r3 ready, they will send the upgrade to you for free when it is.

as far as the course goes. its strange. its like dj school.seems wierd to me i taught myself to mix and scratch. everyday after school i would just come home and practice for hours. they would probably be better with some piano lessons and some music theory.i played classical music for 10 years and its the back bone of all my music.

I bought 8 sonic refills today for $80 so that worked out nice

Now i just need a few others to round out the collection. I went to the sonic reality webpage and all the demos sound pretty damn good to me.
