Bill Bottrell who produced the song is a member of this board - Maybe he'd want to share his secrets with us?!

"Who is it" is an absolutely epic song - I love everything about it from the bassline to the percussions to Michael's flawless vocals

Bill, where you at?!

I mostly remember hiring a soprano to sing the main melody. Her name is in the credits, we did it at my studio in Pasadena.
I recall there was also a keyboard, now what would that have been?
David Paiche played some Yamaha. The big, wooden one that was the prototype for the whole DX thing.
I may have built something out of commonly available (at the time) samples.
just can't remember. Check the credits.

it sounds funny how you talk about it as it would have been just one aside project not knowing you did music history there

I feel stupid for not checking the booklet, the soprano voice girl is Linda Harmon.

Oooh great thread!

I gotta say I don't believe that 21 sec. intro to Who is it is a voice, but a synth....I too LOVE this song and wish to know what synth brand was used but still looking for that answer, lol. I think Harmon sang with MJ in the "And it doesn't really matter...." verse since the voices seem a little "high".

Now there ARE "mixes" of Who is it, like this one (below) where the intro sounds very much like a woman vocalizing (and I don't care for it - album intro version is EPIC, lol) but on the album version, it sounds like a synth. I love everything about that song, too and boy is that "intro" haunting.....oh would anyone know what type of drum was used? Sounds like a snare - it's tight and "snap" like.....

Any idea what kind of sounds they used in this demo? I'm guessing some of kind of electric piano with some reverb for the chords (:41-:59) and some haunting strings for that that B flat chord (1:19-1:37) and also sound for the instrumental break (3:02-3:29) guessing by ear here. Any input on what you think these sounds are and from what model, I'd appreciate it.

I would like to eventually like to try and create some mixes of MJ's songs and love the sounds they used in this demo of Who is it so trying to figure it out - I want to get as close to the sound as possible. I've mentioned before that I'm still deciding on a Korg M3 or Yamaha Motif XS8. Also what type of drum are they using for the beat/rhythm? Thanks.
