Interesting points made in the article. I think the one that stands out as the biggest difference maker between home and commercial-environment, IMO, is a well acoustically-tuned room. The advantage is obvious here, and I doubt if that'll change anytime soon.

Of course he can make great tracks, he has a Blue Robbie! But seriously though, the article makes a good point.

Ha! ...I have recorded in a bathroom because of the interesting acoustics. It worked really well.

Best quote from the article.

“Of course you can make a recording of a terrific piece of music anywhere, anytime,” Massenburg stated. “To the degree that you as an artist/writer are unprepared, insecure, unready, unclear on the concept, unenlightened, unimaginative, lazy and/or uncommitted, you may need more technology, groovier decor, bigger crews and other artificial supports to prop you up.” George Massenburg

A lot of the rest is on point and I could argue with a bunch of it but I wont. It is a lot to expect when you assume that a home studio is one person and even then there are exceptions. But a lot of home studios can involve more than one person or a team working on the songs. I think we are about at the point where the people involved are clearly the weakest link and not the acoustics, electronics, leather couch, cables etc... Of course within reason and not all people are willing to give away there tricks they worked hard to figure out.

Thanks, Philly.

I would say that home studios bridge the gap that used to exist in the demo making process. You can make quality recordings that if good enough, can lead to your discovery and be easily re-done in dedicated, high-end facilities.
