weird question, almost like asking does man fear death. but not like asking does a bear shit in the woods. After much contemplation I come to the realization that man must deal with the shit and not fear the mpc.

yes

I find the price intimidating for a bunch of features I already have between my 2K AND SOFTWARE

the 4000 is a big pile of crap. the 2000xl and the 3000 smack it silly...

the only thing i like about this machine is the layering and the sampling option..
but all in all its nothin my asr 10 and my mpc cant do.. and do alot more betta..

its not a stable machine in my opinion.. i have owned all the mpc models from the 60. 3000. 2000 200xl and 4000 and the 3000 and the 2000xl for me are my fav..

jus straight 2 the point..

i really like my 4000, but then again i really like my 1000 too, and the main thing i couldn't stand about models before this was the sample management and the lack of RAM. having a full blown sampling engine in the 4000 that you can patch samples completely across a keyboard built in is a real plus, and with all the RAM i can load up a ton of sounds at once which i really like as well. Then again theres a lot of features on there i don't really use.

All,

I think the MPC 4000 was made to try to eliminate the use of a computer for those MPC users that had a computer set up, & a earlier version MPC to boot. The MPC 4000 has kind of the best of both worlds. I will admit that the MPC 4000 covers alot more turf than the other MPC's albeit at a much higher price. I like the additional polyphony, diverse filter set, & increased sample rate. An ASR 10 does'nt clock, or groove like an MPC although I like the ASR 10 too. I sold my ASR 10 several years ago.

The answer is

Get a 2kxl or a 3k and an akai z4 or z8.

I wish I would have known this before spending for software and other stuff.

If I had to start over I'd have

Akai 2kxl or 3k
Akai z8
Korg Z1
Roland JD990
IVory
Sampletank 2 or Mach 5

and that would do me fine (with good libraries)

THE BLUE 2000XL HAD SOME NICE UPDATES TO THE SOFTWARE. SEARCHING ZIPS AND NAMING FILES MOVED MUCH FASTER. NOT AS FAST AS THE GIGASAMPLER & REASON SET UP I'M ON NOW BUT IT WAS FASTER THAN THE 3000 OR THE BEIGE 2000

Overall I think the MPC4k is a fine machine, the cost and size kept me away but otherwise I'd be content with one. I don't know about intimidation though, maybe to a newbie MPC user but I doubt anyone with any amount of years using samplers and synths would find it overly difficult to master. I thought that the 4k did try to become a little more, almost, then what an MPC is used to being, in the sense that with all of it's multi-sampling, synth features it's way more than just a sampling drum machine. This is a good thing in one sense, but at the same time I thought that the workflow was affected, it lost a little of it's immediacy, more menus to flip through, more buttons to press etc. Of course, in overall context, it's still a fine workstation regardless.

Btw Disco D - out of curiousity, I was just wondering if you can hear any discernable difference in sound quality between the MPC1k and MPC4k? Thanks.

errythang i said about the 4000 was write but i had an old os...

i updated the os to 1.71 and the akai mpc 4000 is by far the rawest machine there is from akai...

i was a die hard fan of the mpc 2000xl... but after this update my mpc is jus gonna be framed or put on display... i been using the same mpc for 5 years.

but its officially been retired... the new os for the mpc 4000 nailed it...

the blue machine is a beast... but i got the white one and am now in love with it...

neva enter the studio with out..

I paid $700 for my 4000 after I traded in my 2000xl, it was a barebone system. later I added an 80GB harddrive, CD-RW Burner, and 8 analog output board, and then added 512MB of RAM, over a six month time. and now my 4000 is the single most important piece of equitment I own. Once you learn the OS, it's pretty easy to work with.

All,

When my studio bought an MPC 4000 in December of 2002(I think that was the year) I wondered would I use all of the new features it had. Soon enough I grew into using them. Now I'm addicted.
