I just listened to it as well. Apparently he did it with Jon Brio, can really hear his influence. I'm not a big fan of hip hop in general, it is really a great album.

I am already tired of the hype - whether true or not. Of the 2 songs Ive heard, I did not care for one, and liked the other...

If you are posting here do not even bother until you sit down and listen to the whole record after you do then write what you think . Again please write in your post if you have actually listened to the whole record on a good set of monitors .

as far as SONIC QUALIY .... well this is in another league from any ... yes any hip hop records out there .... even if you do not like the material you will be humbled by the mixes .

Teacher have you sat down and listened to the whole record ?

Yea not on a "Good Set of Monitors"(In my car where is probably the only time I listen to music for pleasure) and yes maybe the MIXING is superior or the best ever etc..... I'm just talkin about the music. I guess to put things more in perspective would be to say Hip Hops Golden Era IMHO is circa 88-96 give or a take a few months.

I listened to Kanye's first LP fully expecting to dislike him cuz of his arrogance and cuz lyrically he doesn't move me to much. But I liked it...definitly a good effort. I listened to this LP with the same expectation and fell short. I think its because after listening to Diamonds I expected the whole LP to be like that...and it definitly didn't live up to that expectation...IMHO of course.

OK.... I just don't see where anyone could consider this the best mixed album ever...

I listened to it twice all the way through on my setup. It sounds alright, but I wouldn't put it in my top 10 or even top 20. Plus, the album is kinda weak if you ask me. Overall, I would say it was a disappointment. I think some people are feeling it because of the fact that many of the tracks snares, kicks, etc are way lower in the mix and it's a new look. I will say it is average to above average, but a disappointment overall.

Listened to it all the way through... and I must say I liked the first a bit better. In terms of what he's got to say as an artist I think it's a little more creative than much of the other Hip Hop out there at the moment, but still not as good as the first. In terms of "sound"... it was good. Not great, not horrible, just good.

it's ok...nothing amazing.

he took a lot of hooks from a lot of songs and did the "im going to cleverly drop this in" thing. Ill probably listen again, but it sounds like everybody rhymes the same lately..it's just the same flow and i can't tell who's who anymore.

He sounds like The Game he sounds like Young Gunz, Jay Z, Puff Daddy.....same ol.

This is exactly how I feel. It's a complete side-step in my opinion compared to College Dropout.

I personally don't like how the drums were mixed. It sounded, ummm well....non-HipHop. IMO, I appreciated Stankonia alot more than this album, but that is just me

he has a few songs that really catch my ear but i think he could've done better imo. the mixes.. they're on point but aren't sonically GREAT.
if i had 2 rate the album it would get a 6.5 or 7 outta 10.. it could be beter, the mixes could be better and hell the lyrics could be sharper.. might take this cd back tomorrow...lol

I posted here, but I don't know what happened to it.

Anyways, I thought this album was not hot. Diamonds is a great song to me. There aren't any other singles on this album to me. I don't think historically this album will be that great. I know he'll sell hella records this month, but there isn't another single on this album to put out!

The drums are wierd as heLL on this album the mixes suck, I don't know what ya'll are listening to this album on, but at home, in the car, and at the studio it sounded terrible. This album does NOT bump at ALL!!! Similar to Luda's song (Stand Up) he did with Kanye.

I think that the samples are not hot, I've used a couple of those back in my DeLa Soul days back in '89. Be original homie. His drums are whack, his mixes are whack, no songs that stick out besides what's already out. I like to hear snares on songs, this weirded out back pack BS hip hop is hopefully NOT the future!

I liked his last one compared to this one, even Commons tracks on his record, BLOW this outta water. I'm not hating, really. I have throwaway tracks better than 90 percent of this album. I'm really dissapointed, and it will be and the used shop tommorow!

BTW, what happened to Rhymefest? I thought he could've stuck him in somewhere, damn he wrote Jesus Walks.

Peace out,

This quote simply disgusts me. I mean do you listen to hip-hop. I mean this is in comparison w/ who? For me to call a cd the best, it needs to be on point lyrically as well as musically. His musical ideas are creative, but hell so are dj quik's and even he won't get credit for "the best" mixes. Now, the lyrics over these creative ideas, are IMO, clever but overall weak. One, more thing...where's the tracker on this cd. if he's going for latin music the up front melodies and drivin bass with tucked snares, this is cool, but for hip hop (we a musical group man) and we like to keep tight snares and kicks. They ain't gotta be up front, and the panning is a nice touch, but they don't need to be faded in the back. As far as this as the "best" recorded hip hop albumn.........your smokin'. He's a good artist, but there are just too many people who've put out much.... Much better quality work.

Ignore the hype!

Kanye's production is way overated in my opinion. Yes it is more unique than most hip hop out there right now, but shit - thats not saying much. He leans very heavily on big samples rather than creative chopping or live playing.
And as far as the mixing: Whoever said "one of the best" hasn't heard much. About the only semi-good thing I can say is that it isn't distorted and trashy like alot of stuff that comes out of major labels today. It's overly compressed, lacking spatial depth (overall), and just generally sounds "cluttered" to me. Snares "way back in the mix"? Huh? I guess anything would sound like that compared to the mixing disaster that was College Dropout.
And Kanye's delivery is annoying and whiny to me, but thats a different story.
I do feel that "Diamonds" is the standout track of the bunch though...

I will put aside the fact that Kanye is arrogant and childish (ie AMA's) and give him credit for being able to make some good music. But the mixes to me only seem standout because they are different, not because they extremely dope sonically. To give him that much credit is borderline blasphemous. But it's all opinion as always. In my eyes Kanye will never come close to classic hip hop albums. At least not with Late Registration or College Dropout. He needs to step his lyrical and flow game up a bit before that can be a consideration. Again this is just my opinion.

so after copping the album yesterday, i thought I'd come post my thoughts.

First thing that comes to mind...entirely over-hyped. One of the greatest hip hop records of all time? Not even close!

That being said, I am feeling a few tracks off of there and it is a good album...I don't feel like i wasted my money buying it, which is sadly the criteria most records are judged. I don't like the mixes too much...not really into the snares and kicks pushed way back, and it seems like the vocal is a bit loud in the mix for my tastes. Overall a good album, but nowhere near what it was hyped up to be. I do love the strings and live instrument element that it has.

As far as Kanye's rhyming skill...the thing about him is that he just knows what kinda flow will sound good on his tracks. I think thats why he has credibility as an MC. His writing isn't that great, but at least its more than guns and cars.

Wel
