1. Mobb deep- the infamous
2. M.O.P.- Warriorz (album still gets me hyped)

not to jack thread but is that hip hop? they are singing pop music "let's get it started" and such. same as andre 3000 "he ya" was a rock/pop song.

I was listening to their album "Behind the Front" the other day, and i realized that it sounds like some of the songs were mastered or mixed by two different people. The volume sounds very different to me from song to song.

HALL OF FAME--> CRITICAL BEATDOWN - UltraMagnetic MC's

( as well as damn near anything touched by PAUL C. / r.i.p. )

Others that come to mind...
STEZO LP (forgot name of it, not the greatest album, but recording was dope).
Main Source - Breaking Atoms
Public Enemy 1st & 2nd LP's
Pete Rock & CL Smooth - 2nd LP.
Mantronix - 1st LP

Many more... but I can't remember 'em all right now...

Sorry I missed the names/tiles of some of the LP's.
( too much hydro the past week.)

Another good call. I never had the album, but the singles were full of smack and body and everything nice.

Good call with Breaking Atoms too.

Pete & CL's second, though? I always found it wishy-washy next to the first (and remember that being a common knock against it). I think the first could be accused of not being punchy enough, but at the same time, the depth of the layering on that one, and how the mix accomodates it really thrills me. But the second just sounded dull to me.

Peece,
T. Tauri

I gotta relisten to this one then.. I was playing out a couple tracks from this LP not too long ago & I remember digging the overall sound (on a club/DJ system).
I liked the 1st LP for sure.

But yeah on the Ultra LP, in particular GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME...
That seminal track is what influenced alot of my mixing style.
Respect due to PAUL C. (aka Paul McKasty / Studio 1212. Queens NY)

Though there isn't much out there on hiim...
Hip Hop Mix engineers need to read up on this guy. Sucks he was killed (around 1989).
Good start here though:
http://crunkster.abstractdynamics.or...es/003807.html

I Would LOVE to know what sort of gear Paul C. was using on them classic albums.
Anyone got any info, details on Studio 1212, Paul C. from around that era?
No one seems to know exactly.

From what I have heard, his brother, Tim McKasty, is still in the music biz (was working with Bad Boy few yrs back).

I must agree that "Around the Way Girl" sounds amazing...I was just listening to it last night. One of my favorite hip hop joints ever

Also 50 Cent's albums have been pretty stellar as far as mixes in my opinion.

Outkast-Jazzybelle
Twista-??? Last album-Song with R. Kelly The Midwest killed it on that one.

i actually just had the pleasure of first listening to tipping point today.

I would have to add that to my list because it sounds great. the vocals are perfectly mixed in my opinion as well as the instrumentation

not really a hip-hop cat but i love that album 'like water for chocolate' - a lot of different vibes on that - afrobeat, jazz, straight-up hip-hop

also that paul c link was cool - never seen hip-hop wrote about like that before!

I find almost everything from the "gangsta-rap" era sounds great. Late 80's early 90s.

Some great LP's would be:

EPMD:Strictly Business, Public Enemy LP's, Ice-T:Original Gangster, Ice Cube:ameriKKKa's Most Wanted, Jazzmatazz (especially vol.1), anything from RZA (especially Wu-Tang Clan:Forever), anything from DJ Premier (Gang Starr etc.).

I agree, "give the drummer some" sounds crazy! those drums !!!!

I'd love to know what did they used on them..I mean those drums sound really classy to me, that snare has that special punch!!! it's BIG and not that big at the same time.. hell I dont even know how to describe it.

anyway I'd LOVE to know what they used to make those drums thump like that. anybody who has any idea what kind of comp was used for example, feel free to share

I still can't get over "hate it or love it" by Dre. I think that beat is unreal. I love the subtle parts.like the guitar that accents the horn hook..how it kicks in on the back end of each 8 bar rotation..it's just an incredible beat to me.
