| Good parametric eq´s for hip hop I would like to know if anybody have any advice on some eq´s that can be surgical but at the same time has lots of character, for drums e.t.c. I´t doesn´t necesarely have to be clean sounding units as long as the vibe is right, punchy warm or saturated. Any suggestions? Thanks- |

| I picked up a used focusrite ISA430, just to tweak drum samples in and out of the MPC. The Eq is one of the best I've used plus you get a really decent mic pre, compressor, etc. It's a really good unit and they can be found for decent prices. When you can find them that is. |

| GML 8200. it's not colored, which may or may not be what you mean by having "character", but it's the only box i've used that would let me do *anything* and still sound good. --jon

| Moderator | I use the Eq's on my board (neotek elite) and am pretty satisfied. I haven't exactly been looking to replace them. I would like something with "character" though and am looking at possibly getting the mutronics mutator, sherman filterbank, or even one of the Moog Parametrics just for an "different" sound. But these DEFINITELY don't qualify as surgical! If you got the cash, SSL FX 383 should make you smile. |

The 554's are and they are ok. Also the 550's are far from surgical.

| the dbx 242 is a good option on the low-end. not sure how "surgical" it is relative to more expensive units, but i am very happy with this units ease of use and sound. |

| First of all, good EQ's for hip hop are going to be no different than good EQ's for rock, jazz, classical or emo hardcore trance masturbation thrash funk for that matter. The EQ isn't what makes it hip hop. If you're looking for analog stuff, I'm not sure you can find a good EQ that is both surgical and packs character for within your price range, but I can tell you I like the Soundcraft Ghost's EQ's for transparent enhancements and 'surgical' tasks. The Ghost is a really good console for the price, and you can build your studio around the thing. For outboard EQ's, the Manley Massive Passive kicks some serious ass, especially on the low end. boost the low frequencies of a kick, bass, or synth and it just pumps. I've heard Pultecs can be used similarly. Of course, those are expensive, and not exactly for surgical purposes, but just make everything that runs through them sound larger than life and/or "warm". Like any piece of gear, you can overuse them. For a really badass, crunchy, ballsy EQ, the Drawmer 1961 is the shit. Boosting a midrange frequency with the Drawmer sounds great on guitars and keyboards. People also use these for mastering though, but it's not as good for that as the manley or pultec. In the digital world, I've found the Sonalksis EQ's and PSP MasterQ are awesome. A lot of people like the Waves EQ's but I think they sound thin. Waves compressors are good though. |

Of cource the eq wont make the music for me, and the fact that you assumes that I think so without knowing me is a bit prejudice I think. ![]() Thanks for the input though!
