MKR, I don't think there is an answer for this. This topic has been brought up many times before. The consensus on this is that you have to find these sounds on your own. Most of these cats spend a lot of time finding drum sounds and don't want to just give that away. Go back and listen to old funk, rock, and jazz from the late 60's to early 70's and I promise you you'll find some gems there. Sure, you'll hear alot about folks usings mic-pres, DI's and comps to make snares crack and kick boom, but it really all starts at the source of the sample itself. Most of what you'll find on some of the sample CD's has been pulled just this same way. In fact, much of the sounds you'll find from commercial CD's are just from various romplers and drum machines. Not anything real special. Hope this helps. |

Do a search on Google there's loads of decent sites, where you can download stuff.... I personally wouldn't buy and newly released so called 'Hot Hip Hop Beats' or whatever CD roms...co's most of the time they either have all those naff cheesey sounds you heard 5 years ago or they simply 'try' and rip off Neps, Dre, TIm, Just, Kanye etc...and they don't usually come close!.....like Digiman said the 60's -70's are excellent source. You can find some good CD Roms based on those samples.

If you really haven't started digging yet and you want to quickly get some good "staple sounds" to get you started, you could look at picking up some of the classic breakbeats that have been used to death and pick up some good kicks and snares from there. The Strictly Drums series comes to mind or the Drum Crazy series would be a good starting point. Happy diggin... |

i think whats works is to amass a collection. just get as many great sounds you can. I have about 5 gigs of drums. I still have my standbys that I always go to, but when it comes to layering kicks and snares, you never know what will work with what.

With a drum machine approach, are a snare and kick sample enough to get a sound full enough to emulate a drum set? I know some producers will use 2 or 3 different samples at a time, but shouldn't there be something else to replace the room mics and overhead that these sounds would have had if they were live drums? Do reverbs and delays work?

In the 80's you had rock bands using bad drum machines as drums drenched in reverb... So when it comes to hiphop, you don't necessarily need to make it sound "real". There are times when you want to do that, and times where synthetic is cool. Or in your face is cool. Or super distorted is cool. | |

Yeah, I know there are some really cool sounds out there in hip hop. I'm not really writing hip hop, but I do use a lot of drum machines. I'm just trying to think of better ways to do it. I suppose this is another thread, but what are some of the better software sequencers that work with PT? What about any cool programming tips you guys have picked up?
