MixPlus or Entry Level HD System

I'm thinking about making the TDM plunge with PT and I'm struggling with wehter I should get a used MixPlus system with an AD8000 and a few 1622's for my synths or if it makes better sense for me to get a HD1 system with a 192 i/o and a 96 i/o for the synths.

Would the HD system offert THAT much better sound quality to warrant the leap to HD?

What is the cheapest amt of loot its going to cost me to get a a decent HD system with some decent i/o where my sound quality isn't compromised.

I know this should probably go on the other board, but I,m a hip hop/r&B head and I'd like to hear you guy's thoughts on this.

Peace.

The advantage to going HD is that it's still supported!

You can't get new software and stuff for a mix system.

I've just been debating this recently. I think I'm going to go with a mix system and dump my digi002r. Still haven't decided though. I can't justify the leap to HD (cost wise) so if I'm stuck at 24bit/44.1 might as well have 64 tracks and TDM plugs. I would have to agree with earlier advice to me that HD just isn't worth it. If you don't want to go the Digi002 (R) route, then I say a mix system is your best bet. If you got money to burn, HD all day baby!

HD process cards are like $800 sometimes. Nobody wants them because they want accell. Even Mix cards are more than $800 because some people want to keep their old systems goign on OS9 with all their cracked plugins.

I made the plunge

While I dont think it wise to spend anything unnecessary intoday's music business climate, I made the HD plunge. It's not a huge improvement sonically , but I can work in comfort without my system choking (though I still need another accel card)

Here is what you need to do.

Find a used mix plus (get on DUC and find out which serial numbers are refurbs. MAKE SURE YOU GET AN ORRIGINAL AND NOT A REFURBISHED ONE).

Trade it in for a HD 2 (the price will be $3999)

Use that AD8000 that you were gonnna use. GET an appogee xHD card.

There you have it a HD 2 on the cheap (depending on how much you pay for the mix system and the Ad8000. For me it was cheap because I already had the mix plus for years that I paid $3Gs for)

If you are already working in say cubase or nuendo and you are able to record/mix I'd say just keep working

Mix and old DSP farms

IF you decide on a mix system, I've got some older DSP farms that I'll let go cheaply

Hell I'll do all 4 for $725. It's not a heap of power but that extra bit used to help when I was on a mix system

Good lookin' out No SSL. How much would a mix core and 3 farms cost me in the used market?

I think you can get a core for $1,500 and Mix Farms for $800 (maybe less these days).

I went from LE to Mix+, but wasn't really satisfied until it was a Mix+++. Even then I'm sometimes turning to RTAS as well, particularly if anything like a Waves LinEQ+MB comes into the picture. HD is pretty cool with ADC, and in a G5, just the native power alone is amazing, not to mention adding something like Accel.

Hope that's helpful.

I bought a used HD1 off of Ebay from Bonyton Audio in New York for $3,500. My Digidesign guy is coming over today to install everything! I thought of the Mixplus system but I got the HD core card and the 6.7 software for only $3,500, and i plan on upgrading to 6.9 tonight when he does the installation!!
