Certain compressors have a distinct sound that you can pick if you've ever been lucky enough to work with 'em. Not that I can always hear 'em, but sometimes they stick out, here's another....

whats the first sample from? I like the sound of the snare. Does anyone notice a strange hum in the right channel in the sample at 0.06, and again at 0.16 and repeated as the loop repeats? wonder what that is... I thought it was my cell vibrating in my bag. never liked house of pain.. |

The first track is from Blackalicious album 'Blazing Arrow'. I don't remember which song though. And the hum, yea, a vibrating cellphone sounds pretty right. The second track, which is HOP as you said, is probably more a case of which console was this mixed on really, but yea, well..... |

you've also got to consider what the orgin of the samples used was. The HOP clip definitly has a record sample, i'd assume its not the beat, but I don't know. The blackalicious clip sounds like a drum machine. I really like the snare sample used, it sounds like a loose headed snare, nice and wet and ..."dushy" |

the first sounds like a distressor. good compressor for beats, but a little cheep sounding in the front end IMHO. the second is an E series SSL channel strip with the savage "pot pulled up" attack and the G buss working overtime!!! listen to the rest of the music pushing and pulling under the weight of full on compression on the mix buss. love it!!! |

Sounds like a VCA type of compressor. I'm guessing an SSL.

Aaah, lol, I forgot to say that TSD wasn't allowed to answer (because I know him and we've discussed this kinda stuff before) !But yea, if the first clip isn't a Distressor then I don't know what is. It's got that 'elastic bounce' that a Distressor does so well. It's a beautiful thing on beats. The HOP clip would have to be SSL all the way. The SSL has a kind of 'snap' to it that's gets real crispy, makes for seriously tight beats. Here's one more sound clip, maybe someone will prove me wrong but I'm way too certain that it's a Behringer compressor being used here by DJ Premier. When D&D shutdown they had a stack of these on the list of things they were selling. Of course D&D had other compressors too but some of the sounds on the 'Moment of Truth' album for example are too close to the Behringer sound that I remember from the brief period that I used one. The Behringer doesn't have a specific 'compression' sound as such, it's more about the way it degrades it's source, notice the real lo-fi sound on the snare for example, that's not just the MPC 60 that you're hearing. |

Yes the last beat is for sure a DBX...160 I've been in Primo's room a couple times with Big Daddy Kane when he was cutting some tracks...at D&D Kane was working on his last album....with Emile/Bink Dawg/DJ Scratch/Alchemist....and me myself! Primo's setup is MPC-3000/60MKII...planet Phat..Vintage Keys/Korg M1...big as Urei Main Speakers...and some outboard gear...like mainly DBX compressors..Yamaha SPX reverbs..etc..but you'll be surprised how simple his outboard gear is! His desk i'm not sure what brand...and a Reel Machine perhaps Sony! |

^Now see that's a good article, that's the kind of thing that Scratch needs to do, get a producer to dig right into their production process. 'The Owners' I thought was a step up in sound quality compared to 'Moment of Truth', it's hard to say exactly what compressors from his collection were used and where, but it's clear that Premier doesn't exactly insist on discrete components. There's a DBX 166, Behringer gate something and a MIDIverb all mentioned in the above article above. |

I guess they meant Behringer Autoquad, that's a 4 channel gate / expander. Don't know if it's any good but it's dirt cheap and I just noticed a lot of studios have one. The ownerz definitely sound a lot bigger than Moment of truth. Everything has that extra low end/ punch on it. I think I still prefer Moment of truth tho, the Owners sounds too much " in your face" to me. dont know if that makes any sense. hey guys, could you try and take a guess with the compressors on that snippet ? (its from PR's Petestrumentals) I created a thread about it but maybe I'll be more lucky here. |
