AFAIK the design of the mainboard and a few parts changed for better manufacturing.... I remember that there was a thread once with this info......

I'm not quite sure but I think it was a DBX Sales guy or related who posted it.

The whole transformer issue was discussed in another thread and I believe the determination was that none of them have a transformer. I think one of the popular mods though is to add one.

The 160XT sounds more like the E series SSL compressors while the 160A sounds a bit more plasticy. Both have their good uses. They can also both be moded. I would hate to be stuck with just one or the other, but the 160X/XT is definitely more popular a choice. I guess I would describe it as a bit more gully.

I added transformer (Jensen DBX123) in my two 160X, It's not night and day, but the sound is a little more present, I think it's a good upgrade to do...

I have both an "A" and an "X". The sonic differences are noteworthy and were counter my expectations. I thought the older, vintage unit would be darker, but I find the opposite to be true. The A seems to grab harder and darken when it does, so it makes a noticeable compression artifact. The X stays more open and the high end doesn't seem to get sucked out as much. I therefor find the X more forgiving, more musical and easier/faster to use.

this and the infamous ART PRO VLA II are some of the few comps that are in high end studios but can be afforded by normal people. X/XT is killer for snare so people say - no slouch at anything else either.

I agree with listenact. I have both a 160x and 160a, and the 160x wins the shootout on almost everything. The high and low end is more pleasing through the 160x. The 160a tends to loose something in the high end and when compared I think it sounds a little cheaper. All around the 160 It's an amazing compressor for a couple hundred bucks. Works wonders on kick and snare.

Has anyone changed the caps, or used a modded 160? If so, what was the difference?
