Are most produces / mixers here side chaining the low end or are you getting better results leaving room in the arrangement for the low end to come through ? |

can you explain in a little more detail of what you want to know more about? are you asking about ducking?

| Lives for gear | One doesn't really "side chain the low end"...the question is a bit confusing. What exactly are you asking?

Does it matter? I think you should try it and see if it works for you. If it doesn't find another approach.

Sidechain and key inputs can be helpful sometimes. I like to experiment with them on occasion.

I almost never sidechain kick/bass. I'm trying to remember the last time I had to do that... nope, can't remember, must have been a LONG time ago.

Side-chaining the kick & bass can be really helpful when you're working with subsonic bass tones (think Dilla's bass lines around the 98-'02 era). I know i use "ducking" quite often but only ever in subtle amounts.

I duck the subbass some for pointy kicks to come through, but only in certain types of arrangements. It's all about which type of sound the song is calling for.

It depends on what you're trying to achieve. A lot of dance/pop producers are using this method to create a pumping and energetic basslines and other sounds. Remember Benny Benassi - Satisfaction? Or that tune Poker Face? Phwoah - excessive but it works! I regularly use some soft ducking to make sure the kick and bassline fit into the mix. Less is more with compression.
