by no means am i any kind of expert of critique, but I think that it sounds pretty good. I find trouble tryna understand the chorus, isnt very clear to me as the verse. Work on clarity in the chorus, the verse is on point to me. Feelin the track as well.

that's whatsup, I may have too much going on in the chorus so my challenge will be to make the hook of it more solid. What were you listening through?

Thanks for the feedback.

listened through headphones at first, and found it hard to hear anything in the chorus clearly

then listened through my monitors.. slightly better.. but still not very clear

i mixed the vocals on this track for a friend

he recorded it with one of those samson usb microphones in an untreated room, but i tried to do my best clearing them up

i know it doesn't sound beautiful but a lot of the people that heard it on the contest he posted it at said the vocals needs to be louder.. looking for more opinions

good song

Nice track, has a good feel to it. I think what people mean is that the lead vocal needs to be out front more. This can be accomplished a few different ways:

1-Turn it up! Philly Soul Steak gave some good advice about leveling a vocal, just basically turn your monitors down to a barely audible point and then turn your lead up till it just pokes out the mix.

2-Leave the lead vocal drier (ie: reverb) than the surrounding elements to make it stand out.

3-Eq, by boosting the midrange and presence (1000-2.5k) you can increase clarity but be careful not to overdo it.

Overall I like the song and once it is recorded over with some quality gear, It will be a
nice production.

Keep working on your craft!

hey thanks for listening! i think you're right about the reverb, that's probably what the people that judged the song though (it got first place btw )

the reason i did that was because the vocals were not tracked in a treated room whatsoever, but after experimenting a bit with it a bit today i realized i could definitely tone it down

i have advised him to get an sm58 and a decent interface to get better recordings, hopefully when he does that we wont have this problem anymore

I would really appreciate any "constructive criticizm" from any tenured engineers here. I produced an album for Sneeky Dee last year. Here is one song of the 12 on the CD. Please let me know how my mixing skills are, and how they can be improved.

'Hibernation' - instrumental (so far)

Greetings all,

This might not be considered Hip Hop by some people's definitions (and I'm cool with that) but it was made to be rapped over rather than sung. However, I'm neither an emcee or a singer so I'm open to suggestions re arrangement as well as critiques of the mix itself, which I must admit I didn't spend too much time on.

Enjoy (or otherwise )

Edit: Overwhelmed as I am by your responses I've revisited it (see below). I think it's an improvement (and not just because it's louder this time) and will sound better still once I get a rapper (and probably a DJ) on it. Opinions?

I've been helping this guy out, producing a few tracks for him, mixing his other stuff as 2 track, like all the vocal parts over a beat previously mixed..

I did some work on the sound of the beats and a few edits here and there... anyway, i think he's got a good vibe and his ideas are at least thought out in this day n age..

I tried a few things on the vocals with varying degrees of success, i had no outboard gear, just a low budget job! Or to be precise a NO budget job..

So although i hang here and get some real good info and tips i never post much stuff to listen so maybe have a listen, it can be downloaded and kept if you goto the site...

Hope someone likes it... maybe you'll think it's crapola, but i'd love to hear anyones view on the project. Both sonically or on a creative level..

Thanx.

will you guys check out my mixtape and tell me if im on the right track mixing wise...i only record vocals i didn't make the beats ... i believe since these recordings I've gotten a bit better and aquired a few more plugins and pieces of equipment ........Almost all of these tracks are recorded ksm 27>ua la 610>fast track usb>(ITB ) waves Rcomp> waves desser>paragraphic eq 4 band usually shelf out up to 120>waves l2 or sometimes rvox . i usually bus my fx i use waves trueverb and super tap 2 tap delay usually ping pong. i layer and do a lot of panning. after i mix i don't send it off to master...i just attempt keyword Attempt to master it myself usually adding to the master track waves c4 compressor using the opto mastering preset but usually tweaking it to my liking then i slam the hell out of it with a L2 limiter ...im just telling you a vague outline of my mixing process incase there is something i need to add/take away / improve . obviously i can always improve ! "think out loud MIXTAPE" www.myspace.com/statixxthamc any tips or pointers in the right direction is greatly appriciated

Hey I remixed the track I posted in here last month, used a couple of tricks learned on this board since then, I posted a thread in the work in progress about it. Chek it out, let me know what you think.

Welll it looks like nobodies giving any responses anymore, but I'll post this anyway. I haven't recorded or mixed a rap song in a while so I wanted to get some feedback. I know the dubs/vocal stacking in the verse sounds really sloppy and we are going to re-record it, but I just wanted to get an idea of what else I should be doing with this mix

That's a pretty good mix u got goin' there! Eveything, including low end is coming thru nice & full. As an mp3 suggestion tho, I would convert @ a higher rate, 256 or 320. I haven't messed with reaper too much but imho u are getting a great overall sound!

In the chorus, I would turn down some of the keys/insts. & bring up the vox a little. The bg vox sound great, I wouldn't let the insts. overshadow them.

Out of curiousity, what types of plugs are using--reaper only, vsts, etc.? Anything on the master bus?
