my first rap mix ever. so I'm laying it out here for you to tear me a new one.
please ignore all performance errors and focus on the mix and what sucks and how to improve it. This project was meant to be completed in 2 hours from initial concept to final master. Ended up taking 6 :(

Yes, I'm new here and have a low post count. I've usually over at HC but they have no "RAP" area. I'm happy to give back when the opportunity presents itself. Thanks!

hmmmm.... I listened to a few posts, and many sound very good and commercial, but I have no comments because I lack experience in this style of music. Sorry! I tried.

Stevie Wonder sample out of nowhere! Vocals are just a notch loud for my taste.

It has less high end that many commercial releases, and less volume, but turning it up - it really has a nice sense of space and texture. It does lack something - but it might not lack anything once vocals are in. I like it though. Some of the tones all around could have some more mid/upper mid happening (snare and kick in particular).

Thanks! Any MIX feedback? trying to get better.
It didn't start out to be funny... more of a SPEED WRITING/MIXING experiment. Just ended up more funny somehow. Anyway, I'm more concerned with mixing it Genre correct. needs more low end, less compression is what I hear so far.
Thanks for listening.

Thank you. I trying to re-mix it now and bring the hats out and clean up the low end. But its hard because all I have is headphones. I keep running back and forth to the car lol.

I liked the overall song but it really lacks excitement.
I mean the hook sound a lil bit flat when you expect it to go wild.
Imo if you 're gonna keep the "LCR mixing" you should at least stack harmonies for the hook to make it sound different from the verse.

like I said I liked it tho.

cool, thanks. yeah I was considering having a male singer do some layers on the hooks to enhance it a bit.

My other post was closed, cause I guess it belonged in here... so here's the short version.

We were robbed, can't afford my regular album engineer or studio for my mixtape. Reserved for album work only.

I grabbed some gear to throw together reference tracks. Now I'm hoping it will be good enough for tracking my mixtape.

here's a link to some stems, and what I would normally supply as a reference.
http://www.trackstash.com/swan/sample.zip

Curious if I was to supply a package like that could someone mix it into something mixtape worthy? For $50-$100 per song? Or am I dreaming? I would supply the beats multi-tracks. NOT stereo mp3 like in this package.

I've attached my attempt at mixing it.

Verse wise, how's the mixing? Could engineers that work for under $100 get it considerably better?

On my myspace:
Hempire Records on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos

there's 2 songs I've had professionally mixed. One ft crooked I, mixed by Roger Swan, and mixed and recorded at Green House in Vancouver (pro studio), and other by Daniel Elmes at Dub Vibes (basement studio).

I'd like the mixtape songs to sit comfortable beside those tracks if possible, but obviously do not expect the same calibre. It is a mixtape and low budget after all.

E-40 is having a remix contest for his latest single "The Server" and I recently finished my submission. Feedback would be greatly appreciated:

i think it's pretty good. i am more familiar with old 40 (Federal and In a Major Way, stuff like that). of the more recent stuff, i've heard the "snap ya fangaz" song with lil jon and the hyphy song. anyway, this beat suits his style in my opinion. i don't know if it's hot enough to win the contest, but i like it. the only thing i would recommend is to try and fatten up the main synth stab...meaning the one you use as your bass line. it sounds a little thin to me.

This is a mix of beats I did last year while going through some records I had for ages (some for about a decade) but never got around to sampling them.

excLOUsiv - AS ONE - excLOUsiv/1Eight Productions - SoundCloud

There is also a quick remix of a song that was posted in a thread here on gearsluts.

Getting a raw, nasty '70s funk sound in the box Post #71

If you don't like my shit fuuck

I get better on my own time regardless, and I stick to making the kinda shit I like to hear.

Thank you for the feedback man! Yeah, I may have cut too much of the lows out of the supersaw. D'oh! I already submitted it though. I probably should have posted it here before I submitted. Ah. Live and learn

Hey you guys, Ive been lurking on these forums for a long time, just recently decided to sign up. I just wanna say theres alot of great stuff on this forum and it has really helped me learn alot.
That being said Id like to post up the latest instrumental I made, finished it yesterday. Ive only been producing music for a couple years but I like o think Ive made some huge strides so far. Recently I spent about a couple weeks straight reading up on mixing, and trying some diffrent plugins and what not, not even making anything new, just experimenting, and I think my production has really improved because of it. Still tho comparing my song to a commercial song still doesnt feel right, I was hoping you guys could check it out and let me know what you think, where I can try to focus my efforts to get better!

I got it mastered, not that you can tell from the youtube. I don't know, can you?

It's amazing what a little love from an experienced mastering engineer will do for your song. Wow!!!!! Like night and day. So warm.

And the waveform isn't completely brickwalled. It's loud, but there's still dynamics. I'm just blown away. 1st legit mastering job.

Hi everyone,
important to say, my first language is french. I've been reading and listening to a lot stuff in there, and seems like I still got lots of work to do before I can say I really know hip-hop mixing and mastering. So much good music, and can't wait to know how to handle this myself.

One of my major problem I guess is EQ. I try to read the more that I can about mixing and mastering, and I could say EQ 1 - me 0. Do I change the frequencie range too much? I feel like the song misses some bass, but my frequencies analyst seems ok, slightly higher for the low freq range.
This is amateur, and hope to get the best to upgrade my production level. ANy tip on trick are welcome.
The song is in french

Question by the way, how many hours can you approximatively spend on mixing?

Thanks

@bluntside

Your mix sounds pretty good to me. I'd EQ a bit of the hi-end off that snare, but that's just personal preference.
