My First Mix of Other's Work

Please check out my mix and tell me what you think of the vocal levels, fx, etc.

I didn't perform or produce this. Just mixed it. He already leaked it but it sounded like poop. I told him to let me fusk with it.

This is the first time mixing someone else's work. I did it for fun and practice. I give the dude a break cause he's only 17 but I asked him to send the PT session to me and it was a pain. He doesn't know ftp and he ended up sending me each audio file individually through a send service.

So I had to basically puzzle all the vocal bits into place. It wasn't that hard with his mp3 as a reference but it would have been nice to have a session. At least I had a clean canvas to work on.

So that's it. I took a shot at it. How does it sound? Not looking for an artistic critique, just sonically. Even if it sounds like shit, it's 10 times better than it was.

The right elements were chosen, the mix has space and depth because each sound has a purpose and nothing is out of place. Of course i did some mutes and other things during the mix but my job was to take the song to another level, not fix what should have been fixed in the recording. This is something i preach on here all the time to people looking for ways to improve their mixes. A good arranged song mixes itself.

If you guys have any questions regarding the mix, let me know.

Nice mix, it´s clipping though. If you lower the signal by -0.1dB it´s equally loud but there´s no intersample clips.. just a thought.

I'm both producing and mixing this album which is due to be released soon.

The Bit-rate is not 320 as the file size was to big, just to clarify.

Your thoughts?

It sounds great....bring the mids/vocals up a lil more -- or better, send it to me to get mastered...

Naw. I slapped a limiter and eq'd it a bit but this is as close to mastered that it will probably get.

Thanks for checking.

I can't do an in depth sonic critique of a mix on youtube, but I can definitely tell you the limiter adversely affects the mix during the choruses.

Here's on I'm working on with a friend of mine. I've spent a lot of work getting it to this level, and would like to know what you all think of it? Please be harsh and honest if need be. I want to know how to improve it in anyway I can.

i listened to a lot of your tracks. all are decent, some better than others. a few of them would not play (such as the one with the "doo wop sound"). by far, my favorite is the one that sold, "Never Give Up." It doesn't sound "Southern" to me at all. Sure, if you strip down to the kick and clap, then yes. Other than that, I would have guessed this came from UK. i like it a lot, sounds like something Imogen Heap or even Massive Attack might do. Not what I expected from the Yay Area. I think this is actually suited to your strengths. Almost all of your songs have some kind of dark, electronica-ish feel to them. None of them really had a pure hip hop sound, much less Bay Area feel. That is not a criticism, just an observation. If I were your manager, I would say try and make more songs like "Never Give Up." Do you have a Virus?

That one is better, more original, than the other one. And BTW no disrespect was intended on my comment. I just think that that another track sound like tons of commercial shit that have already been done, and played so much on the radio that everyone is tired of that same instruments together.

But don´t listen to me I´m not even in US, maybe this shit still sells...

Anyway, your comment about my music is welcome.

thanks for the post. my objection was to the fact that you chose to endorse an extremely harsh comment. i felt that anyone comfortable enough to do that would exemplify a much different artistic approach to their own music. on a positive note, i commend you for the level of success you appear to have attained thus far. good luck!

Yeah it was a wrong way to say what I wanted to say, I apologize for it.

About this another song, I know this delayed (off tempo) synth is intended to be that way but I think is a little too much, or is something wrong with it, I can´t say exactly what it is... The drums is tight but I think the hats is too harsh... But I´m on a crappy computer speakers because I don´t use internet on my DAW, so I can be wrong.

PS.: That thread sucks, is too much idle. When we was able to post on the main forum it was good, but now sucks...

the synth is kind of harsh sounding, but it don't know how much the sound is affected by your speakers. any cheap pair of headphones should give you realistic sound; i'm talking about the ones people buy for portable cd players, etc. anyway, i agree about the thread; i got much more feedback on the main forum than this one. i'm going to post about it and see what kind of interest there is in a way to post beats.

"Look Who" Rough Mix

New track I'm working on called "Look Who" Still only half finished, waiting on my boy to drop his verse so it's not mastered yet. Just the master fader turned up in Pro Tools.

Download Look Who - Open Verse.mp3 from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Any feedback is welcome. I do all my own beats, vocals, engineering, etc.
