Damn Killah "The E Tape" is dope. "Dream Haters" & "Show Of Hands" are my personal favorites. Not one bad track on it though "Winners Never Loose" is not my cup of tea.
Kudos for doing this! Nice to hear some real Hip-Hop again.
Whattup. Dig this - listen to your hi-hats in that track. You've got a bounce going, there's a dynamic, and it doesn't feel "metronome". The hi hate work is really good.
Now listen to your bass. Notice how it feels a little rigid, and the movement of the notes doesn't really feel natural. They don't totally connect right. Try to get that dynamic movement and that "played" kind of feel in - adjust the attack envelope a little and the timing. A good way to do it might be to get a bass player, have them play out the part, and then try to get your programming to feel the same way.
Think connection and movement. The organ is a bit flat. The snare decay is short for the tempo of the track. It leaves it feeling a bit disconnected.

this is some really good advice... i never thought of how the notes should connect with the groove.
thanks man.. i gotta keep that in mind next time.
what do you mean by the organ being flat? how could i improve on its part?
and by the way... the hats are 100% quantized haha

yeah, but the different attacks and decays and textures on the hats don't make them feel that way! Which is really good programming.
The organ kind of just hangs there. Sometimes that's what an organ wants to do, but sometimes a little volume riding can help bring the organ to the listeners ear, and then sit it back down in the mix. This way you always have hearable organ, but never too much organ - if that makes sense. And it's really up to you to interpret just how you want that done.

makes a lot of sense.
thanks man.. i never do enough automation.
i'll definitely put that into my process next time.
Currently in the navy so I'm stuck at sea most of the time using my laptop (with logic) and a pair of ear buds. Not sure how it sounds through some monitors. Any suggestions on how I can improve would be highly appreciated.
Hey, here's a track I made for an upcoming release. It'll be the first hip hop record I've worked on. Please take a listen and your feedback is greatly appreciated
this is pretty dope. i like when the snaps come in. has a real smooth vibe

I love the composition on this one. The keys are perfect. Only thing that bugged me about this is the snare. I like the pattern of it, I just don't like the sound of it except for in the little breakdown parts (I wouldn't change a thing in those parts). I think its because all of the other percussion has heavy reverb but the snare sounds dull/dry which makes it stick out from the rest of the beat.
