Scratch Magazine

Any good or too amateurish?

http://www.scratchmagazine.com/

Edit: I just wanted to add that i haven't read an issue yet I just saw it in a store and made a mental note of it. I think it's great though that a magazine came out highlighting the production side of hiphop. When magazines like Keyboard or EQ profile a hiphop artist, it seems like they sort of slant the article so that it would appeal to their usual readers, and I don't really find the articles all that interesting.

I think it´s pretty good, it doesn´t dig very deep though. I like "waxpoetic" and
"Big Daddy" as well, more about the digging cuture though.

Well the only issue i have bought, is the one with Timabland on the front.

That issue was okay, it read a little bit like a teen magazine or somthing. I'm glad that they have this sort of magazine out but i wish that it would go into more detail about certain elements that are just skimmed over.

I've got a couple of issues and they're always an interesting read, but, yea, definately it's not like any of the producers being featured are giving out their best production secrets. The content is a little thin in that sense, a gem here or there but generally I'm always wanting to hear more.

It's the only magazine I buy these days though, apart from the occasional audio mag.

I agree not too much real info...

We need a mag that s more audio pro's oriented...

But then again I don t think the big names are too keen on sharing the info...

the way the world is everyone would just copy instead of absorbing the info...

i bought it twice, and didn't like it. there is no real info in it, it reads too much like the source, XXL or any other magazine. thought it was more geared towards tech stuff , production and engineering inside info, etc..
interviews with producers don't really go beyond "your beats are dope, did you use a MPC for the drums?" kinda thing..
dissapointing.

Scratch is intended as "info-tainment" for those with home or low-budget studios... more slanted toward newbies than seasoned (old) pros.
In case you haven't noticed, the industry is shifting away from big budget artists, production, studios and labels to more of a DIY approach. Look to the M Audio- Digidesign merger as proof. Kids have dreams of being the next media mogul due to what they see on TV. Scratch magazine is written with them and their eyeballs in mind. It's all about advertizing dollars.

I finally picked up an issue...

I liked the short profiles on different producers on how they started out and how they were "discovered" and the few little bits of info they drop about the business side of things.

Other than that, it was a pretty quick read.

We still need magazines

We still need magazines it is sort of like Playboy, tons of online stuff but it is still nice to get a fresh copy in the mail to keep in the bathroom or in the studio.

I know that there is company trying to come out with a new magazine (www.hiphopstudiomag.com) that is more professional than Scatch...I signed up for it, they came out with a prototype copy and the guy that owns it changed partners so I don't know what he is going to do in the long term. It is a tough market for magazines and you can see it in the changes of the others (Mix, EQ, Keyboard). But I thnk they will always be around because gearslutz love gear porno !

I actually like the Scratch mag! I find it more interesting than alot of other publications, eventhough it only scratches the surface. I feel it should have more indepth interviews, and more hands on columns of the producers in the studio, but it's still all good!!
