Akai S950 Should I sell?

I have an Akai S950 in decent condition but am unsure if I should sell it.
The reason is, I have an MPC60 with Linn Upgrade for the 12 bit samples and a Akai Z8 for the typical 24bit samples. Can someone advise me if I should or if I should keep it.... maybe pros vs cons, especially vs the MPC60...

You must not have noticed the filter and variable bit rates yet...

Keep it, they go for a decent price but still for your set up it worth holding on to it. As an old-school sampler it's far more versatile than the 60. like JaeOne said the filter and the bit rate, it also has loads of other editing & looping capabilities that just aren't in the mpc/linn range.

Thanks guys. But the thing is, realistically, how much of a difference is it going to make in a simple pop or hiphop track if I use it or not? Are there alot of producers (named or otherwise) using it still for their work? can you point me to their akai sampled work? I could use the money to perhaps buy some software such as Nexus but still confused...

Ok then if your not using the mpc60 as a sampler because because you didn't like it's old-school sound & your only using the Akai Z8 as your sampler then ok you don't need the 950. But if you still intend to use the mpc60 as a sampler your playing yourself using it over the 950.

Not many new producers use that kind of sampler anymore but trust me they are still have a place. Obviously ppl like Dj Premier still rock one & they have some fairly large named placements, not only in the hip-hop world but also with mainstream pop acts, so it can still work as long as you do your mix it right.

I guess it's a choice only you know the answer to?

Hi Tt

Thank you, yeah I guess its the choices we all have in selling or keeping our gear with no regrets....

On a side note, have you guys ever experienced any delay in the note timings.. i tried to overlap some sounds over the Z8 24bit samples and for some reason my ears tell me that one of them is out...I listened closer the they just dont sit well on top of each other...any thoughts on the midi-timing?

Never used a Z8, I used a 950 via midi with my MPC3000 & never noticed any delays, but maybe some of the other guys here can shead some light on the subject.

I think the S950 is a classic piece of gear. I´ve had mine for many years now, and I don´t feel like selling it, even tho I dont use it that often anymore.

The lil money you can get for it makes me want to keep it in my rack even more.

If you are using an MPC60II only as a sound module, are you saying the S950 is everything the MPC is sound-wise plus more?

I use an MPC60II but only for the sounds as I sequence in Cubase. I'd love to have it rackmounted so is this the answer?

Yes thats what am saying, the MPC 60 sampler is basically a watered down 950, same sound less options, the MPC3000 again a watered down S3000 same sound less options.

Now i haven't had a 60 but i was told it didn't have a filter? if this is true straight of the bat the 950 has a filter not to mention lots of cool editing & looping capabilities. BTW it also defaults with a sine wave.

I think it's worth downloading a free manual of the net to check what the S series samplers can do, there great and go for much less than a MPC.

I took a lil reading of that. Definitely, Primo has been using the layering functions (multisamples and envelopes) for his kicks
