Nearfield Monitors for Mixing Hiphop

A lot of us in bedrooms and basements can't check out the mixes on mains to hear the bass....so what other options do we have if we want to get our mixes as deep as the big boys without screwing it up?

Is a sub necessary?

We have been using the Tannoy Reveal passives for years w/ no problems. Just have to know the room in and out...

i check mostly between 3 types of monitors.

for critics: my monitors.

for hearin: some hifi.

and a radio: old radio with mono box.

mostly works good. headphones are good for bass control or even if you
boost your mixer in the lowends to hear whats happenin and if it plays together.

who needs subs?

Who says u need a sub? I say if you are on a budget get a pair of wharfdale diamond 8.2s (would say NS10s but they arent budget speakers anymore).

NOW LISTEN well Get to know some good ref material see what the bass is doing on those records. If yours is alot stronger than those you have too much bass in it

i'd look to 4 or more Mondo Traps first ... in a small room a small speaker can work okay, but you have to be able to hear it

i'm using Event 20/20's

also i have an Infinity 200watt 12" home theatre sub, it's got a knob that i can sweep the crossover from 60hz to 150hz....i turn down the nearfields and listen to just the sub....it's been very handy on predicting how it'll behave in a car with a good system.

cheers

sub is good making sure youve got those shake frequencies in there, plus you can monitor quieter and still get nuff bass

Believe it or not, i use Behringer Truth's..........I know these monitors get a lot of heat but i find they are fairly decent and i can get my stuff to translate to other systems fairly well. ymmv

If your on a budget I have finally been able to hear what is happening on the low end in my mixes by going here and getting some almost too affordable traps

www.gikacoustics.com

and also adding a blue sky media desk system which is great for us guys in smaller rooms. I got my blue skys for about 500 including shipping

http://abluesky.com/p_s_gb/p3s7.html

I know there are already a lot of heavey hitters in this room with adams and such but if your on a budget I do recommend this setup as oppossed going with another good speaker system in the 400-800 range that still may not give you the ability to hear the low end which is one of the key aspects of Hip Hop IMHO.

If your new to accustics i recommend this article at their site also even if you get speakers from somewhere else some good info here on why traps should be in your studio.

http://abluesky.com/p_s_gb/p5s15s1.html

So for about 650$ i had a much improved overall monitoring environment that tightened up the low end and allows me to hear what is going on. I think as a lower end producer/mixer (for the moment ) this represents a better overall value than just getting some speakers in a bad room.

YMMV
