I think Battery 3 and Sampletank 2.5, would be the best places to start.

Or if you want a more electronic synthesized sound, you could go for Sylenth, Vanguard or Z3ta, instead of Sampletank.

Save your money and read for about 6-9 more months. It's somewhat free.

get ableton live, NI Battery, NI Komplete Synths... This should keep you occupied for a while. If you don't have that much money then get Reason...

It's a very good program.

whoa, that is like the broadest question...

what kind of sounds? what kind of music? I assume you want hardware (which is great when controlled from fl). Depending if you program everything or want to play it. Having a great controller is important for easy access for editing parameters. Probably a multi-timbral keyboard that can generate 16 separate channels. If you don't need keys to play you could get a rackmount unit to save some space.

I'd recommend grabbing Reason or Logic and calling it a day. The present and future are digital.

Man, between FL and Reason, there really isn't too much that you can't do... high quality sounds are pretty easy to come by on the net free with some googling. The Rewire feature makes it a breeze to get both programs to work together as a cohesive unit, which streamlines production a lot.

I also have an Akai MPD pad if I get the urge to bang out my drums in FL the old school way, and my Roland XP-60 (which also has a ton of great sounds) doubles as a midi controller for Reason.

Most all of my aftermarket plugins are availble in FL, but I just sequence there, and export the beat tracked out and do all of my mixing in Audition.

I have Acid and some other programs as well, but I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I've used them...

People usually prefer one software over another for whatever reason, but with my current setup and the sounds available, I really don't see the need for any more software. The better your production skills become, and the more experience you get under your belt, you'll find that what software or hardware you're using really becomes irrelevant.

My opinion would be that you're on the right track with FL, but you might want to check out Reason as well, or at least something better suited to instrumentation to get those sounds you're craving.

Reason and Fl studio are great little tools, but I know for a fact that the reason mixer sux bigtime. So if you wanna get serious about it, you gotta at least consider alot better mixing enviroment like protools, cubase, or even a mixing desk. Those programs are going to have a lot better sound if you run them through a better mixer. Doing every thing digitally is one way to do it, but you can benefeit alot from expanding too.

Sampletank sounds thin as hell. Get one of those racks. Like a motif or fantom.

The search button, use it. This has been asked 1000 times. Also, if you want people to take you more seriously then you might consider writing more seriously.

It's true, for some reason the mixing engine in Reason is something that a lot of people complain about. However, that's not an issue for me because I track everything out and mix in Audition

I haven't actually tried it yet (because I have no need to really),but I heard that they cleaned up internal mixer for Reason 4.

battery

+1 for Battery. Great sounding drum samples and software at a reasonable price.
