| Lives for gear | There's so much ****ing FUD in this thread that I'm going to vomit. First of all, the major social networks, Twitter, Facebook and (sadly) MySpace have been around for more than a few months. Twitter has been around since late 2006. If you're just joining the party and have your panties in a wad because you think it's actually, "just a new trend of the month" then that's your own problem. Yes, MySpace is trash for the most part, but some people have been able to use it as a useful tool and outreach to fans tastefully. It's a decent platform for music promotion, although many people abuse it and 100x more have tastelessly designed pages. Facebook isn't popular because "MySpace got trashy". Most of the growth on Facebook is from people that never had a MySpace account, and worldwide its taking off at a rapid rate. At the same time they are two very different networks and the type of connections made are completely different. Facebook intentionally limits you to 5,000 friends (which I think is still too many), whereas myspace has no such caps. MySpace is great for large scale outreach, but Facebook is designed to be a friend to friend connector. Twitter is totally different. Sure, there's some people that share only the minutia that is their lunch on Twitter, but you don't follow them then! You only see what you want to see. It is a great way to have group conversation, helps enrich events, and share valuable information. If anything, most Facebook updates are more boring daily activity than Twitter. MySpace isn't exactly dying, but Facebook is set to be the #1 in size now (or very soon, depending who is counting). Facebook isn't meant to promote your band. Twitter isn't meant for any specific thing, but to trivalize it as only a place to share stupid things you do 24/7 is just showing your own ignorance. It's a service and what you make of it. |
