good tracking compressor?

I was looking at the 500 series purple compressor for rap spoken word. I really want to use some analog compression going in. Some say its not great for tracking?
besides teh 525 what are some great aggressive compressors for 500 series. this would be paired with a 512c pre.

Or i thought I could start with a dbx 160x used form ebay? what do you guys think?

i just invested in the 500 series too so i need to know as well...

i've used several regular rack compressors for tracking can anyone fill in the

blanks for me...

summit tla-100 = ________________

la-2a = ______________

1176 = ______________

cl1b = _______________

i know no two pieces of gear are alike but i've had success with the pieces

above can anyone give me rough equivalents in the 500 series or just flat

say if it can't be done that's cool too if that's what you think...

sorry to hijack the op. the compressors above are what i could personally recommend

'fraid not.

But what's a couple more rack spaces for a solid pair of highly useful tools?

i don 't know much about the 500 series compressors.

the best tracking comps to me are the CL1B, LA2A, or 1176. for rap, its generally an 1176

The Distressor is a very good choice for a first high end compressor. It is very versatile and I give it the thumbs up.

Since the racks have come up, don't 4get about an old DBX 160x/xt... I know its not a distressor or definitely not a tube tech, butttttt, we're talkin rap so that box would also be nice, but I stress, an old beat up 160x or xt...

distressors are going to be the best bet for that $ imo although they are not in the 500 series. are you really looking to get color out of the compressor? maybe a different mic would be another option. what is your current chain.

It all depends on your mic/pre. The purple definitely has color. Say what you have and I think that will dictate the direction of your purchase.

all joking aside.

seriously, there is literally a whirlwind of choices to make. and with software taking over......

there are tons of rack mount gear from the 80's 90's collecting dust at the used music store nearby mate.

i'd recommend dicking with stuff.lol.
no kidding.

google is your friend. seriously, you can find out a lot.

my personal favorite all round compressor "going in" is the focusrite 'octopre'

but its not cheap.

good luck

The distressor works great for aggressive vocals like rap. It is probably the best choice for a first compressor and it sounds awesome! Wish I had two more.

Yep agreed. I usually tend to use the cl1b for smoother singing type vocals, where the distressor works better for attacky rap vocals.

ANy advice on settings for compression? Im used to setting up plugins.
The purple has a input, output, attack ratio and release , no threshold.

im using 4:1 ratio
with about 4 to 5 db of gain reduction
