A Good Microphone for hip hop vocals?

I've narrowed it down to the MXL Genesis, M-Audio Sputnik, AKG C214, or the Sterling Audio ST79, and i've included a sample of my voice. any help would be appreciated.

I was recently at a well-respected studio here in NY, and noticed they had a modest vocal chain (but the whole PTHD setup)...

Shure KSM44 ~> Avalon sp737 vt ~> PTHD

BIG BIG sound coming out of there.

Now I've never heard any of those 4 mics you posted, but for the same price, I can recommend the Shure KSM44/737 vt and vouch for the end results.

Some folks like that Groove Tubes GT67.

Geez, here we go again...another stupid "hip hop mike question"
There is no such thing as a hip hop mike, dude.

Just throw up about three or four mikes and have your performer "spit"(not literally of course) and just a-b the results and...VOILA!!!
Just like magic, the answer will be obvious...or atl east it should to the trained ear.

BTW..you cant go wrong with a Shure sm7b in most cases.

Ok ok ok I dig that, but also the EV-20.
But normal there isnt THE BEST mic. You have to try out what fits you/the singer/rapper. I had c12 and a brauner valvet X on a rappers voice that just don't sound right true a la-610 strip. He had his behringer B2pro with him, I did a take... and hell it just sound right in to the mix. It just depends on the moment and the voice of the artist that make the take.

Don't know of a mic thats genre specific. People have said that already so anyway, what pre are you using? I set a friend of mine up with a focusrite platinum pre and a sm7b. Sounds good for the lil dough. I would suggest that combo.
Good Luck.

Good advice!
Its also good to leave another mic up for different textures on dubs and ad libs.

That being said, I've had great results with the AT 4050, EV PL 20 (the older RE 20) and even the Blueberry on some sources.

The NT1a is OK, I'll use it on ad libs, thats about it.

I noticed a huge difference when I upgraded my pres to API 512c and UA Solo 610.

Philly, do you have any experience with the Neumann TLM 67 on hip-hop vocals? Ive heard some recording done with that mic and it seems to fit a variety of vocals. Sounds amazing.

I guess the argument could be made that there is a mic that would work well for many hip hop vocals. For instance, a microphone that has less sibilant tendencies would be one quality that we would look for in this type of mic. Also, maybe something with a brighter top end in a condenser, etc.

But, there is no rap vocal mic. Except for this thing I have on my desk, but we can't talk about that.

I stopped useing battery a long time ago cuz it would always give me a double hit when I would play on the keyboard!!

I use ezdrummer and addicitive drums now...but I have to use sticks with my v-drums...I sure miss playing the real thing though...

Never tried the TLM 67.
I have however, used an original Neumann U-67 back in the day
Awesome mike.

Also, I reiterate..for me vocals are just vocals and NOT genre specific.
Its either good or bad...male or female with timbres which are artist specific.

Thanks Philly for the response. By the way, I just plugged up my keyboard to my studio monitors using Gotham GAC-2 balanced TRS cables and oh my goodness. The sound difference between these an my old cables are rediculous. It sounds like I upgraded my da converter or something, LOL. Im pretty sure you got decent cables but you and the rest may wanna check these out.thumbsup

philly.. we gotta get them...!!!
you put me on to the adk's last year, now the rap-o-fonic...

ok ok, all jokes aside. no such thing as a hiphop mic or hiphop pre, hiphop monitors etc.. somethings are used more in the hiphop field but that means nothing.. dont blend it with everyone else b/c they have a u87/737 combo...
its cool but a i could spend the same or less and have a vocal chain that will blow that combo away
