Getting a Large Crowd Sound...

I've been trying to figure out how to get a strong crowd sound w/o having 20+ people in the studio?

Has anyone done it?

I'm thinking just do 20+ tracks and tune them all to different pitches.

And I don't mean an audience sound, I mean like a group of guys/girls saying a hook or "what" or whatever. Kind of like Polow does, although there are many other songs that do this.

you can tune them with a plugin, or have the vocalist actually sing or chant them in the different pitches. I use the latter method, but I suppose the first should work fine too.

im not sure about pitching the vocals but if you have a couple people to help you can stack diff variations of the "crowd" from each person. ive done this using just 1 person alot. get 4takes of him/her doing it low and mean, 4takes medium, and 4takes shouting. on the other hand its best to experiment while you are doing it. after stacking all the takes a lil bit of chorus and careful use of reverb could give the illusion of double that. recording in diff spots of the room can also give you more variation with each "character" you layer.

with stacking the same track a few times, that can work at different pitches, but not always. If it's a singer, it's hard because you got to get the CORRECT pitch, and sometimes the correct pitch sounds a bit 'chipmunk'/'mouse' .. So it's best to get a singer to record it live and stack it then.

Or if its a rapper, just a few cents pitch change will make it sound nice. Basically, singing, = no. Shouting monotone/rapping = yes

I would have 3-4 people in front of an omni mic. Use 4-5 tracks, or 4-5 takes. Pitch shift a little bit on a couple tracks. Add some verb... thumbsup

i always have good results (with only one singer), when the singer is not so close to the mic.

A live room is the key. I like MS mic setup for crowd stuff and have 4-5 people move around the room for each take.
