Dual Purpose Preamp?

I make beats using Reason 4.0. I have a Digi 002R. I would like to start running my drums/sounds from Reason 4 (Rewire w/ Pro Tools) through a preamp to beef up and warm the sound.

Additionally, Im looking for a quality preamp to record with.

Which preamps should I be looking at? I do understand that good A/D conversion is a factor, the 002R will be moded soon.

Thanks,

Alkota

Dual Purpose? I think you meant Dual Channel Preamp. Their are many good ones out their. If I were you, I would jump into the 500 series preamps like the Atlas Juggernaut, Brent Averill 312a, API 512, etc. You will have to purchase a 500 series rack for the preamps but the choices you have are endless. Also, it's better than paying thousands of dollars on one preamp where it might not fit every recording situation.

You might be looking at the wrong solution for your problem(or "want"). Have you tried buying better quality sounds samples? That's the key. Start with quality, and you'll usually end with quality.

What was said above - source/converters first Id say. But :

maybe telling you to buy super extra Formula 1 tyres for Suzuki Swift 1000ccm, however:

Aurora GTQ2 - stereo mic amplifier / di with three band Eq..its higher price range, but for 2channels 2 eq at level of this superb quality it is one of best offers i think..

did not try it personally, but worked couple of times with GTQC which is one channel - /not 100percent sure but it is the same preamp and same extra nice Eq as GTQ2

and it was probably one of most exciting times i had with music.

In lack of money you can still work with solo pre to track drums mostly in mono as it is done usually../I track through Great River ME1NV + SSL Eq/

Not sure pre will sort out Reason, which i do not consider is the right thing to do a bangin beats. Id get MPC + Logic : )

but there is still plenty of other options .

I've heard people mention running soft synths, etc. through a preamp to "warm up the sound" or whatever the phrase will be. Is this really a common practice? If so, is it usually done with tube pres or all kinds?

To the OP, maybe you could overdrive a cheaper tube pre, thereby using it more as an FX box. Or you could look at all the saturation/harmonics/distortion plugs out there. I don't have pro tools but I've heard enough about Massey Tapehead to last me a lifetime!

Then perhaps you could take the remaining (bulk of the) money and get a second, higher-end pre for recording.

I have nothing but great things to say about the Aurora Audio preamp... One of the best you can buy at any price.

Yes, but it is not a fix-all for lackluster sounds, etc.

Are you ever going to be recording anything else besides music? Recording vocals or anything else in the near future?? If so, it then would worth getting a preamp. Looking for better sounds should be your first priority. Otherwise if you really want to spend some money upgrade your monitoring (D/A and monitors) first. Between the amount of plug-ins that saturate and EQ you should look to those 1st.
