Help With this Kick

Alright, I'm workin on mixing this track and I have an 808 kick that I'm gonna layer up in hopes that it will sound EXACTLY like the 808 kick that pounds in Lil Wayne's "A Milli" cause that's the exact sound I want.

I attached the 808 kick to this post so I could get some suggestions as to how I could getting it to pound without distortion and whatnot as it does in "A Milli". Please look at the waveform if you can to further your suggestions, it's pretty big and bassy by itself.

Thanks in advance

Sirocco or Donovan might be helpful.

Justin,

A Milli's kick sound (according to my ears) is:

a simple, constant-frequency (not changing in pitch) quite-sustained 808, with the high-end rolled-off quite a bit. Get the longest 808 sample you can get, roll-off the highs, and compress it a little bit. Probably 3:1 ratio, -3 or 4 db threshold, 20 ms attack 100 ms release (or close) with Waves Renaissance Comp in Opto/Warm modes. If you want more 'pump', make the release faster (10-20 ms, or so).

I would personally also layer a 909 as sustained-as-possible, mixed in *low*, for a bit more 'punch'.

I did what you said and the results are great!!

You have a good ear!

My only problem now is the fact I can only hear the bassy kick through my headphones and stereo, but not through laptop speakers. I want them to have that "official boom" cause you can hear "A Milli"'s 808s through ANYTHING!!

Any recommendations??

make sure you don't roll-off too much high end. Maybe add a short 909 kick layered-in for more attack.

Beyond that, I would have to hear what you have going-on to compare.
