It's in your performance or composition....there's no magical technique to add energy after the fact...unless your mix is completely god awful, but then it's just basic techniques. This is a very vague question so don't be surprised with the sarcastic answers you got...

Exercise more. Seriously. The physical state you're in can sometimes help or hinder the creative process. I make more energetic music when I'm feeling fit, I've got more energy to focus on the little things that can make a track.
And when I'm tired, I make tired music.

Its both the composition, performance, and mixing/mastering process.

What do you mean by your performances lack energy? Do you have a myspace page or sample of your audio? Maybe we can help if we can listen.

The pad sound in your track #1 makes it sound too much like X-Files TV/Dreamy type stuff. Not that it's bad, but I could see it being played to a transitional somber scene of a movie, not something you would rap to and DEFINITELY not something you would have a vocalist sing to.

The second track has more of the same feeling and flavor. More suspenseful though.

Both of these would fit very nicely into a "New Age" or "Ambient" playlist but not Hip Hop or Rap.

If Hip Hop or Rap is the direction you want to go, then you need to kill everthing but the drums and start again from there, avoiding the urge to use pads, strings and crystal rhodes sounds.

A good mix engineer can inject some energy into a mix, but you gotta have something there for him to work with. If you're not naturally getting exciting-sounding mixes (not necessarily good-sounding, though), you just don't have it. Nailing a vibe in a mix is, IME/O, one of those things where you either got it or you don't. You can learn to clear out all the mud, maximize clarity, and place everything perfectly, but if it ain't exciting, what difference does it make?

Start with better material, finish with better production (including the tracking, mixing, and mastering). Don't try to do it all yourself, and don't think you hafta be able to do it all; most folks can't.

listened to 1min of #1.

arrangement first. it took 45 seconds before the drums came in. it was one string sound for 45 seconds. no one will listen that long. it puts u to sleep. get to the gettin. 4bars top in intro. better yet let the snr fill come in a bar then hit the track. pull stuff in and out as well.

let the drums lead and turn down the strings. use some reverb on snr & hh and delays on music. also ur sounds r tiny. extremely small drum sounds especially the snare fill u got panning.- it sounds like a small clap. U gotta get better drums or fix those up w/ parallel comp and/or layers. also layer ur strng sounds and maybe use some parallel comp on those if u cant get thicker sounding strngs.

a little bit of high end can add some "excitement"

Let a pro mix it and it will be a totally different track.

there's different types of energy.

your beats gave me a vague new age type of feeling.

maybe that's what you're after but i can imagine (more) people will perceive this as a lack of "energy".

try listening to some heavy metal before your next session.

I think maybe less compression and more dynamic change can help build up the energy of a song. To me energy is related a lot to "groove," and they're both very abstract. If it was just you saying it about yourself I'd say make sure you're in the right mood when listening. Sometimes songs that get me batty when I'm feelin good won't do nearly as much when I'm not. But if other peeps are telling you this then its good to hear them.

Also I listened to the two myspace tracks, and ya, it is laid back. It's not really my style; it sounded kinda "clubby" but not "dancy." Maybe either tweak it till it makes you wanna dance, or go the other direction and make it some kinda ambient or mood or backpacker type stuff or whatever-u-call-it.

their beats are dope... Theres no secret to it- its all about vibe. No compression setting is going to get your beats to jump out like the runners.

I like to have a real good workout before busting out joints... Gets the blood flowin and the energy goin
