New Producer Needs to Build Drum Catalouge. HELP!

sup yall..

im a new producer and im trying to build up my drum catalogue... ive been looking online at some drum discs but im not sure if I wanna buy drums from some random company who probably dont know anything about good sounding hiphop drums.. i bought an AWESOME drum disc called "The Dirty 30" from the producer M-Phazes thru his myspace page and i've downloaded a few of those home-made dj premier discs that are floating around but I wanna buy drum kits that come from a reputable source.. can you guys recommend any other producers that release "official" drum discs or can you recommend good companies that are releasing good drum discs?

thanks for your help guys..

peace

You should really, really, really read Producer's Edge issues 3 and 4.
It's all about drums.
Samples, processing, chopping and covers lots of options for Drum Works.

Issue 04 is on the homepage with Teddy Riley on the cover
Producer's Edge Magazine

And Issue 03 with Pete Rock on the cover is on the archives page.
Producer's Edge Magazine Archives page

And of course there are tons of free drums scattered throughout the magazines.

+1 on the Sonic Specialists. I copped the Quadra bundle a few months ago and am really pleased.

Hip Hop Drum Sounds, Kits, Hip Hop Samples for MPC,FLStudio,Fruity Loops, Reason are worth checkin' out too.

Loopmasters Pro Sample Cds, Sound Libraries, Rex Files, Reason Samples have some dope selections as well.

Umm I've never bought a drum cd although I do sample a lot. But I then tweak them into my own sounds. I took a couple months from making "beats" just to focus on finding drum sounds and tweaking them to create my own kit. You learn alot about sound doing that. You often also start figuring how to achieve a certain sound without buying a million cd's trying to luck up and find it.

I only paid for drums once (goldbaby 808) and I still have not used it yet. I sampled every drum kit and percussion sound I have or should i say use from CD, Tapes and records. Home made drums as well. Like the RE-20 in the dryer boooom.... etc. I borrowed a Linn Drum and Oberheim drum machine and sampled those as well.

I remember back in the day having drum holidays. I would take a whole Saturday and look through records, finding drum breaks and one shots. Maybe once every other month?

I keep saying that one day I may share my best kits with todays youth. (No matter, I can just make more)

I think anybody just starting out should learn how to make their own drums. Its a necessary skill IMO. If you dont listen to breaks and understand how drums interact as a cohesive unit, your drum programming may suffer.

I just got like 7 DVD's full of drums that came with my newest MPC, and I keep forgetting I have them until a thread like this pops up... lol. I used to bust on people for having GIGs of drum sounds... Now, by circumstance, im one of them..

Hell yeah.

I deliberately purge/delete my library from time to time.

It's like a wardrobe of clothes. Anything I haven't worn in the last six months gets thrown or to charity — regardless of what I paid

Am I one of the few people left who believe in building your own drum kits instead of buying them online. I feel like downloading/buying drums is kind of cheating plus I don't like most of the drum sounds u get when u download/buy kits

Just remember no rules. Everyone has a different process. I haven't sampled any drums. Thank God for those who did it for me.

Everyone have they own way of doing things... Honestly, I personally do not have time to be sitting there sampling drums, thats one less step I have to do when I purchase a good drum library. I've purchased so many libraries where I've picked a few good ones from each one and make em my go to kits. Its a new day and time is of the essence, on top of that time is money. More power to you but most of us are cheaters I guess because I rather not have to worry where my next drum kick is coming from.

Sure there are. If u go too far from those rules you'll have a whole different style of music.

I second the sentiment. You can't let creativity stifle you either.

Gotta be careful when you start with the Producer Morality Bar. someone can always raise theirs higher than yours.
He samples, I compose.
He bangs pads, I play electronic or real drums
He uses quantize and swing, I use natural timing
he uses drum sounds, I make weird noises INTO drum sounds...

Plus, all these drum sound for sale are the same 12 sources flipped again and again.
1. Producer kits with samples from rap records.
2. Hollow Sun via other sites with different names for folders (sometimes)
3. Future Music free stuff
4. 300 BreakBeats/Famous breaks
5. That Retro pack with all the old school drum machines
6. The workstation pack with the Korg, Roland and Yamaha drums
7. Phatsos Place, Looperman etc...
8 That FTP site with tons of drums (you know the one I mean)
9. The entire Bangin Beats package (the $500 one) broken into pieces
10. Those old AKAI discs
11. sample libraries like Big Fish Audio and EastWest with renamed kits
12. All the crap from above layered.

So some cat gets iZotope Vinyl and makes his own kits from the material above....or uses L1 to make his drumz bang!
Or Buys an SP 12 or MPC 60...
Or an expensive unit like a Pultec...or SSL strip or...

or uses more rap and hip hop cliche images on his site...an MPC for his company logo...or ties this stuff in as free samples in his blog...

2% of the sites selling drumz are the actual source of original sounds.
If you can buy expensive commercial VSTs that promise 16,000 fresh drum sounds and STILL get these same damn drum sounds in their player, what do you expect from a little website powered by irrelevant images of Dr Dre and horrible blingy Gifs.

When you're brand new, this forms the basis of your drum collection.
Which is fine for a while.
Then at some point you realize you have to do more then cycle through a dozen folders auditioning snares, kicks and hats.

So you search for something to do to these drums. Discover Transient Designer, feel like you found the ultimate solution and decide to sell drums yourself. Now, where do I find the drums to flip? Ah yes, back to the same sound sets from above.

When I used to make fun of the GIGs-O-drums people, I would always try to picture myself scrolling though GIGs of drums at any point om the year. What a time waster. It would probbly take me a year just to scroll though all that mess. Im gonna listen to wax anyway... Even if I dont find a drum break right away, I may find something else to sample.

Of course I used to take it to the extreme and say things like.. "Who in their right mind, would scroll through 20gbs of drums before each song? You cats must not be sleeping or eating (or maing music). Ya got waaaaay too much time on your hands."

That would usually add some spice to the conversation.
