Rap Vocal Mic and Compressor (Philly, Ken Lewis)

I know the mic subject has been beaten and it all depends on the persons voice but Im trying to narrow down my next go 2 vocal mic.
I have the e-100 and I know you have experience with it as well as many others for male rap vocals.

Could you make a comparison to these in comparison to the e100?

At4060,At4047,At4050,Pearlman tm2,Mojave ma-200,Peulso 2247le,sm7b,u47,ADK s-7,Studio Projects cs5 or c2,ADK model TL,Rode k2,Cad trion 8000,KSM44.

These seem to be the consistent top rated and I would like to know in your opinion which would be your top 2,regardless of price but considering versatility and quality. The Peulso,AT4050 and sm7 seems to be consistently recomended but I would like yours and possiably Ken Lewis,s opinion.

And if you could compare them each in regards to the e100 for male rap vocals.

The puelso is a bangin mic, also the sm7 (the most versatile) because it can be used in broadcasting, live rooms and vocal booths. , also different mics works differently with different pres, im pretty sure you know that. You should try the groovetubes GT67 mic, its so warm and nice and performs nicely with my 737

How would you put the sm7b up to the puelso cause the sm7b about 500 cheaper?
Also It seems for the money a used 737 is probably the best deal for a high quality pre.I know its not the best any there are many thta dont like it or WHATEVER.But its obviously a nice pre amp Aand you can get one used for 1300.00.Most of the other that people talk about are 1800.00 -2500.00 range.

Is the puelso and sm7b good combo with the 737?

The sm7b requires a LOT of gain (dynamic mic!) the avalon has a High input mode. it works quite well but get noisy IMO

yeah the 737 is great for R&B, Hiphop vocals. I bought mine new, and its a kick ass pre. The sm7b requires large gains, just like mdjice said which the avalon features so its up to you. You should head to a studio with one or a music store and see

Thats a tall order,bro.
They are all different animals and very hard to compare

IMHO, the sm7b is your best bet for "rap vocals".

I have a Trion 8000 which is a tube LDC, but I do mostly singers these days.
The e 100 is cool for certain apps and I have used it successfully on certain singers for a particular "vibe".
I also use it on various instruments.

You realy have to experiment and see what works for you in YOUR studio.

No doubt.I think I have made my decision. How would you compare the sm7b to the peulso and far as sound character?I heard the peulso described as dark but what about the sm7?Is one brighter than the other?Im asking cuase Im thinking about getting both but if there sound is similar there is no point to that.
Unfortunately I dont have a place to hear these mics I live in a small city.

The sm7 is a dynamic mike and the Peluso is an LDC

Stick with the sm7 for rap

sm7 or sm7b and is there any difference in parts on different versions or editions like other mics(with this tube and that transformer),that I have to be aware of when buying one? What would be a good pre amp for the sm7 philly?

And can you suggest a second mic to match with the sm7 for female vocals when I need it?Peluso?

I currently have a dbx 1066 comp.Should I scrap that and get a different one for the sm7?Probably keep the dbx for drums though.

sm7 doesnt have a tube. The sm7b is just a later version
Its a dynamic mic.
Believe me,for your purposes its great, just buy a pre with a lot of gain and you'll be set.
For female vocals, look into the ADK Hamburg or the ADK s7.

I would agree only on if the recordings are being done in an untreated/ un-isolated room. Otherwise, the 47 LE is a fantastic mic for rap vocals that I have used for the last couple of years consistently.

I heard some samples on the Tm-1 and it sounds nice! How would you compare it to the 2247 for your senerio?
And is the TM-2 just as good if not better than the tm-1?
By the way I dont have a booth but my room is treated and my vocal area is an entire corner laced with 2"ultratouch covered with 3 inch foam and ultratouch panels on the roof.

Im not a real anal kind of guy so I really dont get too technical.
With me,its the vibe of the moment,so I try to capture the moment by any means necessary.
Try not to ponder so much and just make up your mind and go for it

Aye, Philly, for the SM7B or any dynamic microphone, do you prefer a tube compressor ala a La2a/Tube-tech CLB or La3a or Daking Fet II which is solidstate and why.

Well, which TM-1 did you hear? Over the last 4-5 years, I would say there have been at least a half dozen different versions (including different capsules, tubes, etc)... At one point the TM1 and 47 LE were almost the exact same mic, but they are much more different now (and probably still what many would consider similar).

But, when it comes to hip hop vocals, I've always preferred the 47 LE, because of cosmetics alone. It looks better and psychologically speaking I ALWAYS got a better performance out of every single rapper when we auditioned both mics (sound-wise they were always very similar, so that was not the issue).

I did not like the TM-2 on hip hop vocals at all. It is a better room mic/ instrument type thing. Although, I would still go for the TM-1 in most scenarios.

I'm not familiar with "ultratouch", but foam in general is evil and should not have much of a role in a studio application. There are better materials that cost a fraction the price.

BS booth suggestion?

I have my corner treated very well but its not closed in and I kept getting told that that is pretty important for hip hop vox to create that intimate vocal sound.I currently cant close the corner off for various reason but some suggested to hange a curtain with soundproofing to close it off but that sound dumb for a couple reasons. First Im not sure that will give the intimate isolation, and secondly it will not keep room noise from coming in.

My reasoning for both is that it will not be air tight.Im I right about these assumptions? Is it not worth the time if I cant close it off airtight?

Damn you been goin hard with the post lately. the people who post, will have a 99.99999% chance of having a different mic Pre, so by them posting samples wont help u at all if you dont know the pre it ran thru. I mean a 737 sounds different that a Focusrite or 1084.

Just my thoughts on the situation, liek i said find a studio and demo yourself you'll proly find mics better than the ones you put in your title

Simple suggestions:

Instead of treating a "corner" you'd better treat the whole "control room".

If you dont have a treated vocal booth/iso room you should look into products like the reflexion filter (there's several alternatives), that and a couple of blankets to hang behind the vocalist.

Heres the deal.
Its not about putting up a bunch of shit to "treat ypor room"
Its not that easy.
You either have to get a pro in to do the right job for you or really understand the whys and the what fors of audio treatment.
There are meters available which determine just where in your room the problems lie and how to correct them.
Its all about mathematics.
Like I said, there is no quick fix but with some elbow grease and trial and error, you just might nail it.

Hey bro,
No need to worry about it so much.
You can really lose sleep over this kinda shit.
It really varies a lot...even the room temperature, humidity, spit from some nasty ass rapper with no studio ettiquette, you name it... can **** with a mikes response.
Please TRY SHIT OUT and then YOU decide what works for bro Skiroy.

Out....
