Thread Starter | Need help choosing MIC I have a API A2d and I need a mic for R&B, Rap and some Gospel vocals. My choices are to either buy an AT-4060 and a C-414 or buy a U87ai. If I get the two I will still have a little money left and will have two good usable mics or should I just go with the one mic which sounds good. The money is not as big of an issue but I want to use a little common sense, since I dont have a ton of experience on them I'm asking. Would I be able to cover more ground with the two, will the quality of sound be on the same level? Last edited by delano517; 13th January 2009 at 01:40 PM.. Reason: mis spelling |

| Depends on the sound you like. That's been said plenty of times though. If you want a common pop sound go with the u87. Can't go wrong there.

| Lives for gear | I think if you are gonna go for the U87 thing you should go with a vintage 70's or 80's one rather than the AI as I haven't heard many good things about them. I haven't used one myself so take that with a grain of salt. I believe someone is selling a vintage one on the GS classifieds right now. I haven't used a 4060 but I have heard great things about them. I just copped a c800g for a super price and fired that thing up last night and was like whoa. I also have a Wunder CM7-gt and I did a verse with both (2 seperate passes but same mic pre and same distance and volume etc) and I have to say I was very happy. It had a very "mixed" sounding high end to it without being harsh at all. The Wunder was more mid forward but also had some harshness to the sh and ch sounds and wasn't as open on the top. I can post samples of both if anyone's interested. I tracked them through a BA 312a Pre direct into 192 PTHD convertor. Also I think I need a new tube for the C800g as today it started doing a weird distortion intermittent thing, so I have one coming on thursday, might be better to re-do the test and post after the tube swap. Don't know if that just confused things more or not haha. |

| Lives for gear | Cool I'll get you some clips. Turns out the problem that my friend was hearing with the mic was cell phone interference. I can't believe he didn't realize this. Oh well, I'll have an extra tube ready and at least nothing is wrong with the mic. U want a clip with beat in? Or Acapella? It's gonna be straight mic>pre>192 probably with lead vocal and an ad lib. |
