| If a mike seems too "warm", just experiment by positioning the mike differently, as you might just be hearing the proximity effect and nothing else. , and use a hi pass at around 80 and boost a little 5k.

| kiwi is, for lack of a better term, a "brighter U87 on vocals". got one when cats were selling them new for around $900 about a year ago. Dont use it that much but is a very good mic for vocals

I was told if you dont have treatment for low Freqs in you vocal area, its a good idea to use the low cut switch on your mic.But you dont know where the cut off is.So in your post to cut @80hz, if the mic cut off is 120hz then your losing out. How often if ever,do you use the low cut switch on a mic?And what about for catz with lower voices?Would the cut off switch effect them more than others ot is the cutt of point too low to hear the difference? By the way Im using the CAD e100, that you have experience with.

| Lives for gear | Are you saying it sounds better than a U87?The U87 is lacking brightness from what I hear anyways and over priced. So if the kiwi is the u87 sound with the missing high end and thousands cheaper why wouldnt it be the holy grail? What have you been using lately?

wouldnt say kiwi is better- just a little brighter on vocals. u87 is a very true mic that takes to eq better than most and sits well in the mix. also sounds good on everyone. Dont know much about the newer models though. I use sony and u87.

I have a tendency to experiment alot and at one time I used it more than I do now. The 120 cut is fine..it just rools off everything below that frequency and its not a deep cut.

![]() If anything, I find them to be too forward in the upper-mids, quite brash and even harsh (in other words, TOO bright!! But not the good kinda bright!). If I'm going Neumann, I'll take a 47 or 67 any day of the week. For newer stuff, I've had good luck with the M149, though it ain't for everyone. Or even a TLM 170 or 127.

AFAIK the Kiwi uses the B6 capsule from the Bottle but is solid-state of course. the same capsule can be / is used on the Bottle Rockets (which used to be RED Mics), i have a RED Type B with B6 capsule. it is a bit 'bright' sounding but not in a harsh way, it has a very extended low-end that is very nice =) i would pick one up only if you can get 50% off because they run that special yearly it seems... $2k new might be too much when you could get a Bottle Rocket and B6 capsule new for $1100 and although i can't guarantee the electronics are identical, quite possibly comes close to the Kiwi sonically. my 1/50th of a dollar

I have a Kiwi and i love it. I was very happy with my Kiwi/Robbie combination, but since i got my Chandler Germaniums last year I tend to want to run everything through them. I've used the Kiwi on rap, rock-a-billy, rock, and country. It's also pretty awesome looking. |

| I agree... I gave my thoughts on it in another thread after having one for a while. I found it to be a beautiful looking and well made mic, but too harsh for vocals.

Tried it once, long time ago with my band... really great mic sounded very tight, but still it didn't worked for me.. maybe the mic was too honest for the type of vocal's that we did (hardcore/deathmetal kida vocals) didn't got the sound I wanted... Tried it on acoustic guitar though and it sound was absolutely amazing!! |

For what it's worth...I read a Rodney Jerkins interview a few years back where he said the Blue Kiwi and the Sony were his favorite mics of the moment. Of course it depends on who's singing, but it seemed like a pretty strong endorsement considering he has his choice of mics and he liked it as much as a mic that priced around $8000 more.
