okok, rough or not. mine got already everything what i wanted to have - the direction. i noticed a little levelproblem with the bass and a decibel on the verse vocals (yeah and some distortion, i still don't know from where cause levels are all ok..)...thats why i named it rough...

nice to see so many competition in here!

to have a better picture of the result i've mixed the orginal "rough mix" from jazzy with the one i've ended. hear the mp3.

yes and it's different from other approaches here. to me it's sounding more like looptroop, queensbridge... stuff now....whatever that means....

peace

No problem, bruva! It's been a good discussion (OK...argument).

Anyway, I gotta just bust yer balls ONE more time over the quote above. A lotta MEs use outboard digital processing to great effect, for example the Weiss gear (which SMOKES!! and probably gets used on damn near every major record ever), the good (bad) ol' L2, the TC stuff, etc.

Especially those Weiss EQs...those things are smokin'.

OK OK OK. I'm done with the mastering arguing. Let's all carry on patting each other on the backs.

I stand corrected. Again I am not being specific or broad enough. LOL.

I mean I'm not big on using plugins to master or mix for that matter, but hey whatcha gonna do?

Im very biased towards people that master with majority HARDWARE versus VST plugins.

That's what I meant, not digital equipment but charging Sterling Sound prices when you use Wave plugins to master and that sort of loveliness.

Again not trying to start more shit but just sayin.

Random compliment.

Chris Carter has pretty feet.

Definitely. Any place that can only afford VST plugins (****ing laughable) isn't gonna have the kind of room nor monitors you NEED for mastering. Period. I just wanted to bust yer balls a bit more. What can I say? I'm a masochist.

Also, yes. Chris Carter does have very handsome feet.

Had a chance to come back to it for 30min after listening to it in the car. Made some adjustments. What do you guys think?

Adjustment I made....

1. Tighter lowend but, pushed it up more to get more hump, this is Hip Hop nt R&B as I keep telling myself.
2. More width
3. More Vocals- Vocals up .5 to .10db
4. Little bit more SSL push on the output.

Let me know....

Hey, thanx man... I love doin vocals. I love having vocals that are recorded well, which these were. By the way good job to the recording engineer on this whomever it was.
If I was hired to mix this project I would take the time and edit the vocals and VocAglin some of them and also I would take the time and do vocal rides for Lead and BGV's as every word has to be understood but also be in the mix as apart of the song not overshadowing and overpowering it. A good mix has the vocal jump out sometimes but most of the time right in there with the track. Hope this makes some kind of sense.

Again Thanx

You're part Native American? Cool! What tribe??

I'm pretty sure my tribe (Kuna people) slapped their forehead when Balboa landed in Panama. Panama has the interesting distinction of having Africans on its shores before Europeans landed. When Balboa landed in 1513, Ethiopians had beaten him there and were at war with my tribe. However, eventually the Ethiopians had such a huge attraction for our countries environment and well the weemen as well e, that they stayed. I actually have heard numerous stories about the Africans from my great grandmother and my grandmother. Love Panamanian folklore.

I always think its the weirdest holiday in America. Columbus day?? What part of the United States did this guy discover?? And what's so Holy about it?? I thought he landed in the so called West Indies. Carib and Arawak tribes territory if I'm not mistaken.

I thought Leif Erickson was the person who gets cited as the person who discovered what we call The United States.

Sorry, wrong forum..

Peace

Definitely a weird holiday, to be sure. I'll hafta ask my mom which tribe; to be honest; we didn't know we had any Native American blood till like fifteen years ago when my mother was doing a family tree. I'm only like 5%; the rest is mostly Eye-talian and a smidge o' Irish (kiss me).

Oddly enough, though, you can really see the Native American in my face. Weirdness.

Damn Tony, you moved the two threads that were probably bringing the most traffic to the Hip Hop forum, both of which i personally thought were right where they belonged.

Your the moderator but i gotta call em like i see em. As long as they werent degenerating to a bitchfest, which they werent, i'd have kept em there and I personally think you should move em back. I know i know, you left a link for them, not really the same thing. I especially thought the mix engineer thread couldnt have been more on point for the hip hop thread, and was probably one of the best exchange of ideas and learning threads i've ever seen in the hip hop forums. But the hottest beat thread was along the same lines. Gives everyone a chance to see where they stack up with other hip hop producers and again, exchange ideas and grow as producers and engineers.

my 2 cents

Fixed my mix

Well - I finally added my sub to my new monitoring system today and had a listen to my first mix - holy crap - the low end is way out of control.

So spent an hour re-mixing it - referenced against a 50Cent track with a clap etc. and gave it a very quick master.
Vocals could be a touch loud but that's up to personal taste.

Try this one on for size Jazzy

Now you see where my point was going a few posts ago.

Some of the mixes sounded like they were mixed without a sub woofer present or on near fields that don't have a decent low end response.

That's why I like my Monitor 1s. Lots of low end. The subwoofer just fills the blanks, but man I enjoy my monitors the more and more I learn them.

Its also cool to check your mix in the car if you have a subwoofer so you know how the mix translates to real world spec.

So far bgrotto's mix, my mix and the clive mix have translated very very well.

I still need to listen to chris carter's mix in the whip along with M2Es.

Angus I have your first mix. And I wholeheartedly agree, low end was a bit much. Yes the song ain't R and B, but look at Last Real Ni**a Alive by Nas. He has an 808 kick rocking, but very very controlled and tight low end. Perhaps its more of a contextual call.

I may submit my mix to Sound Bites Dog for a free test master.

That's if jazzy really wants to go further with the process.

I haven't seen him post on this thread in a hot minute.

Peace
Illumination

Thats cool Angus, I had to make quite a few tweaks to my original mix after listening and comparing to others !!!

For instance, I cut back/reduced the final limiting, lowered some of synths in volume, reduced the topend highs. Also I had to bring up the snare clap!!, to balance the drums/to make the snare hit a bit harder....!

Hey what sub did you go for !!! Im looking to get one !!

Thanks Illumination glad you liked my mix. Hey, I wanna hear your mix with a test master on it, so I can compare your mix when the levels are up!!

I actually liked the first mix better! This newer one feels markedly less exciting, and there's a hole in the 100-200Hz octave (what I like to call the "car low end"). Did you cut like 120Hz or so on the bass? Maybe you took it a bit too far. If you're mixing in a small-ish room, this is right around where nodes and nulls often rear their ugly heads...

Also, where'd the cymbals in the chorus go? I could swear they were more present before...I miss that top end excitement. It really helped lift the chorus.

Last, it seems the aggressive low end on the first mix was masking some problems in the low mids. There's a ringing of sorts in the 400s; it seems the main synth is fighting with the bass, and it's eating into the vocals (which, by the way, are otherwise brilliantly placed, if not a hair dry). The synth lead in the verses is also poking out more.

Maybe there's a happy medium if you split the difference (plus a couple more tweaks)...?

EDIT: DOH! Heh, I was listening to kosmokrator's mix. Sorry... Im'a check yours out now, Angus. (I was wondering what happened to your file-naming etiquette)
