i wasn't looking for a hand out, i originally asked for rates and received a ton of rates in my PM which is perfect. the contest thing wasn't my idea, and I didn't think any of the fulltime pros would be doing it anyways. I assumed it would mainly be people who wanted practice, or just to have fun. so again, if anyone is a pro and wants to just jump in and mix without giving me your rate up front, go ahead, but don't send me a bill and expect me to pay it whether i want your mix or not lol. if not, that's cool too.

I have to ask, so is everyone who's going to be participating in this cool with getting credit if your mix is chosen, i.e. "no pay, just credit"? I don't intend want to get mixes back and then get a bill for something we cannot afford.
See, this is exactly why I never participate in these things anymore unless I have a down period with nothing to do and the song is of a style that I normally don't get hired for so I can use it to hone in on my skills a little better. What inevieably happens, no matter what the OP originally says, at the end of the day after someone "wins the job" it turns out there's no money to pay for the mix, or it's like a couple bucks that are nowhere even remotely close to what the actual job would cost.

Sorry Jazzy, I'm not trying to single you out here - it wasn't even your idea to post a mix-off to get the gig. I'm just remarking that by and large these online mix-offs to win a mix gig almost never turn into an actual realistically paying gig.... or even paying at all.

I just want to make sure everyone knows what they are getting into. And I appreciate that Jazzy made it clear the financial situation before people actually hunkered down working on the thing rather than waiting until after the fact.

All is cool; you're being upfront about things which is good. My (humble) suggestion is that YOU set a price, simply out of respect for the profession, and let the "contestants" decide if it's worth their time or not.

No disrespect to you, at all. Again, you've been totally upfront all along. I'm just voicing my stupid opinion.

EDIT: oh, and by the way, I'll be trying my hand at this thing either way; I'm getting some new gear this afternoon that I wanna play with!!

It was understood that he has no dough for a mix.
However I'm saddened that he couldn't just give me that subway coupon that was stuck to the gum under his shoe

I'm downloading the files tonight, but I got a biz meeting (booking agent) tomorrow in Oswego, so I'll get to the mix tmw afternoon. Shouldnt take too long to get pulled up in my 24SUM.

Peace

That is really how all mix-offs should be done. The 'buyer' should just set a price they will pay and the the 'contestants' can go for it or not. In fact, it should be a forum rule.

i agree man. but, seriously i wasn't aware that this was a contest to land the job haha. i was just posting the files because people wanted to try their hands at mixing this thing, and since it's a freebie we're putting out, i'm not all bent out of shape about people having the files.

i intend on hiring one of the guys that sent me rates, that's what i came here for lol.
sorry for the misunderstanding, but i am interested to hear what some of you dudes do mix wise with it.

Anyone wanna be a good citizen and upload this file to another server that has been mention in this thread? I cannot connect to Rick's server to download the file.

EDIT: Nevermind! Talked to Rick and got it to work. Thanks Rick!

Just a word of warning guys - last time a group of us did mixes and started posting them up here (for the whole world to hear) a moderator shut the whole thread down.

My advice is e-mail your mp3's direct to jazzy655 and let him decide who he wants to work with and contact that mix engineer privately.
I guess your profile has your e-mail address jazzy - if not maybe you should post it up here somewhere.

Then use yousendit.com or something similar to send the finished files.

BTW Jazzy - have you got a reference track?
ie. something commercial (that was/is a hit) to use as an EQ / Compression / Mix style reference.
Just an artist and track name is fine.

Rick suggested downloading Cyberduck, which is an ftp app for the mac. If you are on pc, versiontracker.com should be a good source to find a free ftp app. Apparently, Rick's server doesn't play well with web browsers.

It sounds like a decent song

You should get someone decent to mix it. Don't be foolish and get someone here to do it for free or cheap. You get what you pay for.

I don't think the demo mix is that great, it could be so much more. (Don't take this as a negative comment, it should be taken as a positive comment)

hmm

I'm not exactly interested in doing free work. However, I am interested in comparing what I do with raw files to what the other peoples are doing. Gives a good reference for technique/ gear choice/ approach, as we are starting from the same point. Is there a way in which we can compare and contrast for learning purposes without the thread getting terminated?

that was my idea when i suggested it. it wasn't meant to be a contest to land the gig or anything like that, just to hear other people's approaches to mixing the same song.

honestly, i originally threw jazzy a price to mix the track. but i don't expect to get paid for it when you have 10 people here that will do it for free. if i have some free time, i'm gonna do a little mix and post it up, for free. but if you want all those different passes or something other than an MP3, then you're going to have to pay for it.

hopefully Tony could let the thread ride out because if it goes in the All About Music section its lost for good!

and to those having issues getting the files off my FTP, please use an actual FTP client like Cyberduck(Mac) or WinFTP(Windows). for some reason my FTP doesn't like when people log on through web browsers. gotta get my web chick to check it out, i don't know why that is.
