Rap Voices?

Hi..
In a lot of Hip Hop tracks the rappers voice is dramatically different to the original voice of the rapper. I know some underground acts, which are just teenagers with some money and totally suck at their voice. they made a record in a good studio and the voices of them are simply blowing everything away.
sounds like heavy leayered stuff, but whats makes this teenagers sounding like rap-monsters on the mastered version?

I also recognized this with eminem. Once on a tv show he was saying something into the mic to the crowd and then returned to rap the refrain. it sounded like he had 2 totally different voices. the "maybe playback" voice was enormly more bright and into the face while the normal voice through the mic sounded like your or my or everyones else normal voice.

i can hear this in many many hip hop tunes. so what you guys is it?

a lot of it is about the gear they choose. some pre amps will bring out the midrange of a voice eg api, some preamps will round out the voice and makeit sound warm and round and full, eg neve. They add an electronic signature (add color) that comes from the circuitry of the electronics. Tube gear also adds alot of warmth. an example of very popular tube gear is an avalon. I cant talk of what they do as ive no experience.

color comes in everything (if you buy colored gear), preamps, compressors, eq. They all do their part to alter the signal somewhat. im exausted th o and cant find the brain power to explain how a compressor woud change the signal. But they do, and with the right gear (which costs a lot of money) the sound is altered to sound better than it would originally.

rappers also talk and rap different. they usually talk loudly when rapping so that changes the tone somewhat.

but i would also agree with equipment, because eminem's voice changed once he got on dre's equipment. i didn't like the change as much, but i've grown used to it.

What about the fact that rappers put on their voice like radio personalities do?

Peace Illumination

Ya i've worked with a guy for several years and he finally stopped doing that. Now he hates to hear his old material.

people say i sound diffrent on the mic then when im just speaking regular cuz im such a laid back dude... if im playin my music randomly and they never heard it before they would never guess its me. Its just a diffrent mindstate ur in. brings out that grit and aggressiveness in the voice i suppose.

No, it's definitely the technique of the rapper first. Most rappers sound different when they rap. Do singers sound the same when they talk? There's different vocal techniques and breathing techniques involved in rapping, and there is stylistic choice involved.
