I produce alot of pop , spanish, hip hop, and rock music and I really dont have a clue on what Preamp and A/D setup I should go with. what would be best for my application. - API A2D....or - UA 2192 w/ Great River Mp2nw. I have a 003 and Im planning to go spdif Bottom line is that I have the enough saved for the 2192 setup but Im lost on what to get. any help is greatly appreciated thankx Adrian |

| ua for sure, but get a dif. pre than the great river (since you're in the rap/hip hop forum).

| Nothing wrong with the Great River for rap vocals. It's an extremely versatile pre. However it depends pretty much on which mic he has - personally I'm in love with the 500-series format and having a few different pres so that I can switch to match my clients voices. In the 500-series format, the API 512c, the Avedis MA5 and the Great River are some worthy recommendations IMO. |

| The mic i'll be using is probably going to be a U87 , soundeluxe u195 or a Neuman tlm107. Is the GR/2192 is a big step up from the API A2D |

| Not a big step.... it's arguable if it's a step up at all. |

If all you've been using is the basic onboard 003, and haven't used much more than that, you will be happily surprised with either. I'd do the API as it costs less...

| Your question seems to be a question of flavor...You need to go and demo those preamps to see which flavor you prefer. I'm sure both preamps have top-shelf technical specs: S/N ratio, headroom, frequency bandwidth, etc. so what is 'better' to you? More color and saturation, cleaner and transparent? It comes in a Purple case? As for the API and Great River flavors?: to me, the API is more hyped in the mids, kinda punchy. Great for drums and guitar. I've only used a GR once but it had a much more mellow and rounded quality, compared to the API, and sounds great for vocals. But either would be fine for any application. Again, if I had a choice between the 2, I'd pick the API A2D because it will save a lot of bread and its a good all around flavor.
