| How to start "sampling" ASR-10 Hi, Im really into post audio, ambient film score stuff so I have no idea what hiphop is (dont hate me) lol.. ~HOWEVER~ The other day I went into "gun and pawn" and found a curious Ensoniq ASR10 for $199!!! Its completely loaded and came with 20 CDS! So I watch the youtube videos and a guy samples some 1940's records into it and does his magic and HOLLY SHIT sounds great. Deal is I want to get into sampling. I need records for this? What about a zoom recorder and get stuff from libraries... Im thinking of starting out with a massive huge drum sample from the CDS and get some funky record and getting started. Where to start? Whats this like, fruity loops style and albeton live? Hope this is not to incredibly stupid of a question! Im thinking more dub style but I think the hiphop sampling concept is the same. Also I have a project I'm working on, making a hardcore version of We Are Family I Got My Sisters With Me (i have some special new lyrics for this) Do I go in and grab out the parts then layer it up and stuff? Is this remixing? I really should learn this stuff if even just for learning. Do I need an expensive record player? Im not "going pro" I just want to learn the skill! Is their software better for sampling then the ASR10? Im told the sounds are massive better then using a software to chop samples. Peace. (dont hate me, I'm learning new stuff all the time) Jay. ![]()

| Gear nut | ... Thats a CRAZY price for it. I own one as well....usually they will run ya between $800-$1000 w/disks...im not sure what you mean by cds??ive never seen an asr10 with cd??im almost 100% that doesnt exist??.....i've seen them as cheap as $500 tho too...so either way you got a GREAT deal if it all works properly....basically you can 'sample' into it with anything that has outs(rca or 1/4'') on it......your best bet would be to get a mixer of some sort...vestex or rane or whatever...even gemini or somthing....then you need some rca to 1/4inch cables and your good to go..plug your sample source(Cd player?tape deck?record player)into the mixer which is pluged into the ins on the asr....turn the sampler on and hit record...hit any button to stop recording...set your 'root key' by pressing whichever key you want the sample to show up on... and go from there...it also has some nice effects in it and you can either sample through the effect or put them on after the samples recorded... I cant really explain how to sample with it tho in detail as theirs alot of things you can do..chopping, looping ect...the mauel will help you with all that...its a big manuel tho..be ready to do some reading...your best bet is to search online for the manuel....read through it and do everything step by step...once you get the hang of it its really easy to use...just a lil confuusing at first cause its older technology.... The Keyboard has a great sound tho and and has been and still is used by some of the best producers in hip hop..... good luck...hope it works for ya...if you have any other questions about it drop em here and im sure someone will have answers....or ill try my best to help... |

| For the music your doing make sure is has the max Ram. Tell Store tech to boot up with the OS boot Disk. Press the "SAMPLE" then press the < "Left" button sample time should say 3min Plus if it says 32Sec. Does Sound awesome on certain sounds and loops expecially. |

| Does any one recommend a second one? It has "Expand" and because I do post I need 88 key hammer action. Iv considered the ASR88. Or should I just get a second rack for expand out? Yes I have already Max ram and have taken the case off and WOW man this thing has some serious innards compared to a Kurzweil K2600. Also I have a K2000r and a Rane rack mixer with 16 channels with loop. For the time I have the ASR10 digital in from my M-audio project mix digital out for digital sampling. IV yet to kind of incorporate the midi with my K2000r. Im thinking of big complex songs with only external gear. decisions...decisions..

| Lives for gear | That was a steal Don't get too complex with her now, she'll get fussy and sometimes freeze up. If you need 88 keys then just get a midi controller and hook that up to her. For that price ill keep her and if you ever grow tired you can either trade up or sell her for a good amount. That asr10 is one extensive ass keyboard and going back into the manual, its more crap in their that us hip hop users never even touched/toyed with ever. Hey prime, I never knew that sample time trick lol! |

| Cd/scsi I have the rack ASR-10, still use it a lot. My rack version has a SCSI connection on the back which I have attached to a older apple CD Drive and I can load sample CD's in from this, as well as floppies from the front, which I have basically thrown out because I also have all my samples on hard drives, again attached through the SCSI connection. You cannot burn samples onto a CD from the ASR-10. You can save to floppy disks or an external hard drive (I think 1gig is the max amount for formatting an external drive for the ASR-10). I have heard that the digital in/outs were a separate, optional addition to the ASR-10 rack, I did not buy into it when I got mine over 10 years ago because the converters are not very good (which in this day in age may actually be a good thing!).

| I always have. It allows you to layout huge sample sets across the keyboard, and have access to them all at once without hitting a zone or range key. It's just a workflow thing. Plus, if you actually load a piano sample it's nice to have a weighted 88 key controller. . . .. .

| WOW. Sorry to bump an old thread, but you really got a steal there. I love my ASR10. It's probably one of the best hip hop workstations, right up there with the MPC series, I actually like it better. The sound of the ASR10 is unparalleled. Where the MPC is loud and a bit over driven (in a good way) the ASR is clear, live, and punchy. A good deal of the early Michael Jackson songs were made on this keyboard, almost exclusively... lots of Boys II Men as well. Watch plenty of videos on YouTube and you'll be making tracks in no time. There is a learning curve, but it's just the basics of sampling at its finest. Good luck! ![]() |

| The thing I love about the ASR10 is the stereo spread it puts on samples. Really have no idea how it achieves this but, when I was deliberating selling mine I ran some samples into my software samplers and compared them to the same sample recorded into the ASR10. The ASR10 won hands down. The depth of sound it gave is unlike anything else. It absolutely killed the software samplers. Needless to say I decided to keep it. ![]() |
